Senate Defeats Bill that Would Weaken Protections Against Aquatic Invasive Species
Today, the U.S. Senate defeated S.1129, the Coast Guard Authorization Act of 2017, based on its inclusion of a provision – the Vessel Incidental Discharge Act (VIDA) - which would have weakened Clean Water Act protections against aquatic invasive species entering the Great Lakes though the ballast water of ships. The Senate defeated a motion to limit debate on the bill 56-42, needing 60 votes to proceed.

The bipartisan legislation sponsored by Senators Bill Nelson (D-Fla.); Marco Rubio (R-Fla.); Jerry Moran (R-Kan.), and Joe Manchin, III (D-W.Va.), passed by a voice vote on October 2.

Conservationists and anglers are applauding the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation for advancing S. 396, the Billfish Conservation Act. The bill, introduced in February by U.S. Senators Bill Nelson (D-Fla.), Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) and Jerry Moran (R-Kan.), was adopted and reported favorably without amendment during an executive session on May 18.

Anglers Score a Win in Senate Environment & Public Works Committee
Recreational anglers scored another big victory last week -- and so did the economy of the entire Gulf of Mexico -- as the U.S. Senate Environment and Public Works Committee approved an amendment by Louisiana Senator David Vitter to permanently expand state control of reef fish, including the prized Gulf red snapper, from 3 to 9 miles offshore for the three northern Gulf states.
