Chinook salmon fishing is closed statewide for 2023

CDFW wants to remind all anglers that Chinook salmon fishing is closed statewide for 2023, both in the ocean and in California’s anadromous rivers along the north coast, within the Klamath Basin and the Central Valley. The California Fish and Game Commission enacted a full closure of in-river recreational salmon fishing in May in response to historic low abundance of California’s Chinook salmon stocks. Chinook salmon fishing seasons will be reevaluated in 2024. Catching and retaining salmon, or intentionally targeting salmon, is a misdemeanor level offense punishable by maximum fine of $1,000 and a maximum of six months in jail. If an angler inadvertently catches a salmon while out fishing for other species, they are required to release it immediately.
