DAIWA’s new Proteus EX rods developed for the west coast market but offer offshore performance for the Seven Seas.

FOOTHILL RANCH, CA (February 28, 2025) – Growing Comfort and control are the key angler benefits of DAIWA’s new Proteus EX West Coast offshore rods, being introduced in early March at the Pacific Coast Sportfishing Tackle, Boat, Travel and Outdoors Show. In actions with the right lengths and power to target a variety of species up and down the California coast and beyond, the Proteus EX series includes 16 rods made up of 10 casting/conventional and six spinning models.

Developed to be used with braided line, “we cover the gamut with our Proteus EX rods for all kinds of fishing situations where anglers will appreciate DAIWA’s focus on providing fish-fighting control and comfort from our cord wrapped grips, oversize butt caps, and an overall lighter rod,” said Chris Martin, DAIWA’s field marketing expert. “We offer these rear grips on all the Proteus EX rods, along with long, thin corded X-wrap EVA front grips on the conventional rods and short thinner corded front grips on the spinning rods.”
The Proteus EX rods rely on DAIWA’s HVF NANOPLUS carbon technology to reinforce the blank through a micro-level arrangement of material in the plastic resin, creating a thinner, lighter, and rigid yet powerful blank with impressive fish-stopping power despite the diameter.

DAIWA’s X-45 Bias Construction has greater strength and prevents twisting and ovalization, providing anglers with needed hook-setting power and accurate casting. The blanks maintain hoop strength under load, creating a much more powerful rod for its size. They all feature Fuji SIC double-foot guides with Alconite rings to advance lightness and durability, along with providing smoother line transition.
Sure to be some of the more popular rods in the series, the 8’10” Proteus EX 810MHB conventional rod is ideal for use with surface iron and fly-lining live baits, while unique West Coast features are found in the double extra heavy 7’4” Proteus EX 74XXHFB rail-rod and 6’4” Proteus EX 64XXHB deep sinker rig rod. Both of these XXH models are designed with spiral wrap guides so anglers don’t have to fight the pressure of the line trying to roll the rod/reel over while fishing conventional tackle.

Additional models in 7’, 7’4”, 7’6” and 8’ lengths in medium-heavy up to XXH action fill out the conventional Proteus EX series. On the spinning rod side, the six rods offered are ideal for a variety of fishing techniques, including popper action, and are available in 7’, 7’6” and 8’ lengths for use with 30- to 80-pound braid.
Martin suggests anglers look at DAIWA’s new Lexa 500 and proven SALTIGA and SALTIST 20 to 50 size star drag reels to match up with the Proteus EX conventional rods, and SALTIST MQ and BG MQ 5000 to 10000 size reels for the spinning rods.
