Early Season Wiggle Wog Tips

By Glenn Walker

In May, the waters in the south have warmed up and the vegetation has emerged enough where throwing topwater frogs is a great option for targeting bass.  But in the in the north, the water is still warming and the vegetation is still growing and this is when I employ the Snag Proof Wiggle Wog.

Here are some helpful tips and scenarios where I fish the Wiggle Wog:

  • If the vegetation is sparse, use Fluorocarbon as it is abrasion resistant and isn’t visible in the clear water.  I spool up with 15 or 17 lb test Seaguar Inviz X.
  • If the vegetation is thick or you are fishing the bait around dense brush, braided line is a good choice.  To keep the braid as low of profile in the water as possible, I run a black permanent marker up and down the first 2’ feet of line.
  • When a bass hits your Wiggle Wog, you’ll want to wait until you feel the pressure of the fish or roughly a 2-3 count until you set the hook.
  • If a bass hits your Wiggle Wog, but misses it, don’t always just bring it back to the boat as fast as you can, begin slowly reeling it in and then pause your retrieve, allowing your bait to sink, this will often trigger the bass into hitting again as it will think it has wounded it’s prey.
  • Besides fishing the Wiggle Wog around emerging vegetation, this bait is a great choice to fish around boat docks as it mimics bluegills very well, which frequent these areas.
