First Look: What’s New with Lowrance

This year Lowrance has focused on releasing new products with their excellent technology, at a much lower price.  They came out with a new unit with all of the things Lowrance users love. Other new items were improvements to their GoFree HOOKED fishing app and a unique transducer than can do many things.

Lowrance Elite 7 Ti

The biggest thing about this new unit is the tremendous value.  It offers many of the popular features for the HDS family on units, but it is a fraction of the cost. A retail price of $649 makes it much less than other units with the same capabilities.

The touch screen seven-inch unit is capable of CHIRP Sonar, DownScan and StructureScan. The units are also capable of running mapping from Lowrance Insight Genesis as well as the Navionics cards.

Navionics users can run the Platinum cards as well as the Navionics+ cards and also record data for updating sonar logs as well as taking advantage of SonarChart live.  Insight Genesis users can take advantage of the unit’s wireless capabilities to download custom maps to use right away as well as for downloading software updates.

Some of the other features include a microSD card slot, internal GPS and TrackBack to review items on your sonar, SideScan and DownScan after you have driven past them. This feature is popular with HDS users and allows for easy waypoint marking.

For those wondering, the things it cannot do that an HDS can are only a few.  These units are not capable of StructureScan 3D, radar and the video port feature.  If none of that matters to you, this may be your unit.

There is also a Lowrance Elite 5 Ti with a five-inch screen and similar features.  The smaller version retails for just $449.  For both of the units, they are capable of running the standard transducers as well as the new TotalScan Transducer, which is available in a bundle for an additional cost.

TotalScan Transducer

One of the best things about the new Elite 7 TI units is the Lowrance TotalScan transducer that works with the unit.  It is an all-in-one unit that combines CHIRP sonar, high-resolution StructureScanHD and DownScan imaging.

It is a compact unit and since it is all three technologies in one, there is less chance that they will interfere with each other’s signal if you had more transducers installed. The reduction also saves cost and makes it much easier to install just the one unit.

The combination transducer supports 83/200k sonar, Medium and High CHIRP frequencies, 455/800kHz StructureScan frequencies. It can also be mounted multiple ways, including the skimmer mount. Retail cost for this transducer is $299.

GoFree HOOKED fishing app

This app was actually released at last year’s ICAST, but it has been improved and is better than ever.  The app does many things to record catches, but one of the most popular features has been the ability to host tournaments between friends.

The catch, weigh and immediately release format is gaining in popularity and this app will facilitate a tournament.  It was used with great success at the ICAST Cup tournament that happens the day before the doors open at ICAST.  In addition to the regular tournament, teams kept track of each catch with a photo to verify and compete against each other.  Bass clubs and groups of friends will enjoy this easy-to-use app.

The GoFree HOOKED app is also useful for keeping a record or all of your catches, the date, time and location.  It creates a virtual fishing log to review later on to help you become a better angler.

It is available on Android and Apple and also allows users to record and save fish photos.  Once saved, users are able to share the pictures of their catches with friends and family via email, text or social media.

Lowrance users will appreciate the new technology that they are now offering at lower prices.  The Elite Ti units are solid and one of the best values available on the market.  The GoFree Hooked app is something that will be useful for anyone looking to track their catches, compete with friends or easily share their photos to social media.
