BETHEL ISLAND, Calif. – The YETI FLW College Fishing season will continue with an event next week, Sept. 29, at the YETI FLW College Fishing on the California Delta presented by Costa. The tournament, hosted by Russo’s Marina and the Sugar Barge RV Resort, is the third and final regular-season event for college anglers in the Western Conference and will award a top prize of a $2,000 club scholarship and an invitation to compete in the 2019 College Fishing National Championship to the winners.
“My advice to the college anglers at the Delta is to cover a lot of water with a reaction bait and once you find something, slow down,” said Yamamoto Baits pro Jimmy Reese of Witter Springs, California, a two-time Forrest Wood Cup qualifier. “A ton of the grass has been killed off and the Delta is fishing a little differently, but the normal Delta-type of fishing is still there – flipping, crankbaits, ChatterBaits and spinnerbaits will all catch fish.”
Reese predicts that the winning team will need to catch around 18½ pounds to have a shot at winning the event.
“Teams that cover a lot of water and have multiple different areas are going to do well in this tournament,” Reese said. “When you find the ‘fishy’ areas, slow down and fish to your strengths. Flipping is going to be tough to beat. But if you can think outside the box, the potential is there to do really well.”
Competitors will take off from Russo’s Marina, located at 3995 Willow Road, in Bethel Island, at 7:30 a.m. PDT Saturday. Weigh-in will be held at the marina beginning at 2 p.m. Takeoff and weigh-in are free and open to the public.
Schools are allowed to register up until the morning of the tournament. Entries may be made either by phone or at CollegeFishing.com.

YETI FLW College Fishing teams compete in three regular-season qualifying tournaments in one of five conferences – Central, Northern, Southern, Southeastern and Western. The top ten teams from each division’s three regular-season tournaments and the top 20 teams from the annual FLW College Fishing Open will advance to the 2019 FLW College Fishing National Championship. Additional teams will qualify for the National Championship if the field size in regular-season events exceeds 100 boats. The Potomac River and Marbury, Maryland, will play host to the 2019 FLW College Fishing National Championship, June 4-6, 2019.
YETI FLW College Fishing is free to enter. All participants must be registered, full-time students at a college, university or community college and members of a college fishing club that is recognized by their school.
