Sen. Sen. Feinstein (D-CA) has introduced yet another piece of legislation to address the drought in her state. Unfortunately, the solutions she has proposed could wipe out salmon fisheries in California and significantly hurt salmon stocks in Oregon and parts of Washington.
But it gets even worse. This bill also calls for the eradication of non-native sportfish like striped, largemouth, and smallmouth bass. These species bring fishermen from all over the country to California and have coexisted with salmon for decades.
S. 2533 - the California Long-Term Provisions for Water Supply and Short-Term Provisions for Emergency Drought Relief Act - seeks to side-step state and federal environmental protections by permitting the maximum amount of water to be pumped out of the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta to other parts of the state. If passed, California’s multi-billion dollar salmon economy and tens of thousands of fisheries jobs will be put at risk.
This bill has to be stopped. Write your Senator today and tell them to oppose S. 2533.
