Frogs, Fun and Fishing | BBT and Snag Proof are Hoppin’

In 2019 the 18th annual Snag Proof Open presented by Best Bass Tournament (BBT) will hop onto the California Delta at Russo’s Marine on August 3 and 4.

Snag Proof – the ORIGINAL Frog Tournament – is a two-day, two-tide event and can be fished as a pro team or as an amateur team.

“It is an open tournament,” explained Randy Pringle, Owner/Operator of the BBT. “You don’t have to be a regional member of the BBT. It is open to all anglers/teams.”

In addition to the frog fest, anglers can expect the fun that they’ve come to know with the BBT.

“Our goal is to bring the fun back to tournament fishing,” said Pringle. “This is a chance for guys to come out and see what we are all about, even if they are not in a regional circuit. The Snag Proof Open offers a 100 percent payback to 1 in 5 teams on both sides.

“Teams will weigh their three heaviest bass each day – a tournament total of six fish for the two-day event, per team.”

The first day kicks off with an 11 a.m. blast off and is followed by a 5:30 a.m. start time the second day.

“Boat flights will be determined by random draw and will reverse day one from day two,” said Pringle.”

Day one sign ups begin at 8 a.m. and Brown’s BBQ will be onsite for those wishing to purchase lunch.

The Hook, Line and Sinker will also be at the launch ready with Snag Proof frogs for that last-minute must-have.

FROG TIP

Anglers can get stuck on fishing frogs in the cheese or mats, but you just can’t overlook the open water situations,” Pringle advised. “Any of the Snag Proof frogs including the original, the Wobbletron or the Buzz would be perfect in the open the water right now.

“On higher tide, you could fish it in the open water, above the vegetation or structure and on the lower tide, you could fish it in the open troughs and alleys between or behind the mats or the open water at the edges of the cheese.”

Pringle noted his first choice for the expected conditions would be Bobby’s Buzz.

The dual tides puts an interesting challenge on the event, with six hours to fish each tide, each day. Even with the shorter competition times of the summer days, the heat will be on!  Last year it took 23-plus to win.

WINDING DOWN THE REGULAR SEASON

After high water at scheduled fisheries earlier in the season, adjustments and rescheduling have altered the original calendar for two of the BBT regions.

“The cooperation and understanding of the anglers with the changes was much appreciated,” added Pringle. “We still have a few events to wrap up the season for each region and even with the change of dates we were forced to make, as always, all regions will have the chance to fish their six events. The Travelers still have events left to jump into for the 2019 Tournament of Champions (TOC).”

The upcoming TOC announcement revealed that for the first time, the 2019 BBT TOC would be held on two days at two different bodies of water. It is an exciting twist in the hunt for the $20K cash payout the TOC provides.

More info on that will be coming in future BBT updates.

BBT reminds anglers not to leave money on the table, when fishing their circuit and there are several ways to earn it.

“Of course, the Berkley Cast for Cash program is still going on,” said Pringle. “We have two boat companies that offer added prize money with Triton Gold and Bass Cat Boats.
