SPO Frog Flash: Enticing a Negative Mood Bass with a Frog with Bobby Barrack

The newest WesternBass installment of Frog Flash comes from the Frog Master - Bobby Barrack.

FROG FLASH #3 – Enticing a Negative Mood Bass with a Frog

“Weather conditions, water temps, moon phases, seasons – these are all things that can affect the fish and their temperament,” said Barrack. “These are things that can put the bass in a ‘negative mood’. The bass prefer a more stable environment. Northern California sees extreme variances in temperature during the days and nights of summer and it spins the frog bite out (puts bass in a negative mood).”

Barrack has a variety of tricks up his sleeve to get a negative mood bass to slurp down a froggy meal.

First and foremost, his advice is to slow down. “You need a really, really, really, (did I say really) slow cadence on the retrieve; I cannot stress slow down enough, here,” he warned.

An ultra-slow frog presentation is absolutely Barrack’s top priority when provoking a strike from a negative mood bass.

Downsizing is another way to entice a bite. Barrack had two suggestions for scaling down a frog’s appearance. One is to tie on one of the smaller versions of the Snag Proof frog. The other is to use the regular frog and trim the tails offering a more compact profile.

Increasing sound with a rattle on the frog can help grab a bass’ attention and adding scent can enhance its attraction.
