Gigantic 700-pound bluefin tuna caught for potential new state record

A Virginia Beach charter boat captain stands to break the state’s record for the biggest bluefin tuna, shattering a previous record set by his friend almost five years ago.

Jake Hiles, who runs Matador Fishing Charters, caught the giant about 80 miles southeast of Rudee Inlet in a section known as the “tuna hole.” Once he had it on the dock at the Virginia Beach Fishing Center, his 114-inch catch tipped the scales at 708 pounds.
