LA GRANGE, Calif. – Bass fishing fans know Greg “Double G” Gutierrez of Red Bluff, Calif, as the first-ever BAM Tournament Trail Pro/Am champion, following his February 2024 win on Lake Shasta. This weekend, Gutierrez, once again, made history as an inaugural champion, fishing his way to victory with the heaviest single day five-fish limit of 18.72 at Lake Don Pedro for the BAM Tournament Trail’s Super 60 season-opener presented by Bass Boat Technologies, Lake Don Pedro, Chicken Ranch Casino Resort and Tackle Warehouse with Conservation Sponsor Fisherman’s Warehouse. The fishing feat netted $50,000 in grand prize winnings and an additional $1,000 in contingency dollars, $500 from Costa and $500 from Bass Boat Technologies for a $51,000 first place finish.
“I like it; I like it a lot,” exclaimed Gutierrez after raising the trophy. “I’m getting tired of pigeon-holed that the only thing I can fish or catch fish on is Shasta and this was a great opportunity to prove that I can catch fish other places and win the trophy; so, I’m feeling kind of excited about it, to be honest with you.”
By weight, Gutierrez tipped the scales with 16.62 the first day and 14.87 the second day – a two day total of 31.49. He earned his spot on Championship Sunday with a cumulative keeper count of 56 (39 Day One/17 Day Two) and while he started out with the same game plan as his first two days on Pedro, his focus had to change from quantity of bites to quality of bites as he went on the hunt for the biggest five-sack of the day.
“It was one of those things I gambled on,” he said. “I didn’t plan on fishing (the same). I was going to go throw a swimbait in the wind and try and see if I could just get the big bites; but I realized if I just made a stop and put a nice easy limit in the boat, I might be more comfortable. So, I started fishing, went through my area and hooked a big one and went hmmm. It made me think about it. I hooked another one the very next cast.”
That was all the proof that Gutierrez needed to stick to his first days’ game plan, and it paid off. He estimates catching 30 fish for the day, but in those multiple limits, he sacked up the winning five.
A Big Change in Conditions
A giant pickup in the wind as gusts blew across the lake forced anglers to adjust; but Gutierrez also noticed a change in the bass behavior that helped him lock in the win.
“It made the fish position differently,” he said. “Before there were a lot of little fish in (my area) and that’s what we caught. We caught a lot of little fish and every once in a while, a big one.
“I knew those big ones were coming in and I could see the big ones down there; but I think all the boat pressure and the boats coming kept pushing them down further and further to where they were unreachable. Without anyone else out there, it was just me and they came up into five or six-feet of water and would eat right away. It was amazing.”
Gear Was the Game-Changer
Gutierrez cannot credit his line, reel, rod combo enough for his success. He revealed he fished down baits on a Frenzy Nail and a homemade, custom dart head, specifically two specific unnamed baits in two specific unnamed colors; but emphasized that his equipment was really the critical piece of the equation.
“It was the thing,” he said regarding his IROD Quercus and Seviin Reel setup that was spooled with Gamma 6- and 8-pound line. “I was getting’ my line tore up on some of the bridge pilings. The fish would make long hard runs and the smooth drag), coupled with the sensitivity of the rod and the strength of the line – in a nutshell, that was the key components. Equipment was the ticket.”
A long-time bass fishing veteran and well-decorated champion, Gutierrez is looking to make room for his new trophy while making plans for the next BAM Super 60 event on Lake Mohave May 2 to May 4. Join the fishing fun and cheer on your favorite angler by finding more info on the BAM Mohave event.
Note: During the first two days of three-day of BAM Super 60 Pro Tour events, anglers are ranked by both the heaviest five fish limit (Weight) and numbers of scorable bass caught (Keepers).
First place is held by the angler with the five heaviest bass and second place is the highest keeper count. The standings then continue to alternate by weight/keepers.
Anglers ranked by weight on the leaderboard are denoted with an asterisk.
Anglers add to both of their Day One rankings on Day Two as an accumulated two-day total. Once both days are tallied, the field is cut to the top-10.
For the final day of competition, all results are zero-ed out and the top-10 anglers fish for the five heaviest bass to determine the champion.
