Iowa DNR Launches Clean Drain Dry Blitz

Brooklyn Center, MN – In preparation for a busy fishing and boating season, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources launched a Clean Drain Dry media campaign to help raise awareness of invasive species. Through a partnership facilitated by Wildlife Forever, highway billboards targeting anglers and boaters will be posted throughout the state.

"Preventing the introduction of aquatic invasive species is critical for healthy lakes and communities. Educating boaters and anglers is one of the best ways to protect our water resources and ensure any new invaders don't spread", said Kim Bogenschutz, Aquatic Invasive Species Coordinator for Iowa DNR.

Highway billboards have been part of the American landscape for nearly 100 years. Marketing and advertising surveys show they are effective in creating a very low Cost Per Thousand (CPM). Through partnerships, a cost of $1 per thousand impressions is frequent. When done in tandem with other outreach efforts, Clean Drain Dry billboards reinforce action-based prevention known to help protect lakes and streams.

"Working with the Iowa DNR and local businesses, community support has been outstanding. This is grassroots outreach at its finest and by incorporating the national prevention message, "Clean Drain Dry" it's consistent, simple and people get it", said Pat Conzemius, Conservation Director for Wildlife Forever.

The Clean Drain Dry Initiative works to consolidate national invasive species messaging by focusing content and communications on the three most effective prevention steps.
