Lake Tahoe’s native trout are making a return this summer – in a big way. Beginning June 1, the Lahontan National Fish Hatchery Complex started stocking 100,00 catchable, Lahontan cutthroat trout into Lake Tahoe and will continue stocking the lake throughout the summer for recreational fishing. The fish will be stocked in both the Nevada and California portions of the lake in an agreement among several state and federal agencies, including CDFW and the Washoe Tribe of Nevada and California. The Lahontan cutthroat trout is the only trout native to Lake Tahoe and the Tahoe Basin. It is the largest cutthroat trout species in the world. The fish being stocked are the Pilot Peak strain known for their fast growth rate and achieving exceptional size. That’s the same fish that swims in Nevada’s Pyramid Lake, which draws anglers from around the world hoping to land one of Pyramid’s giant cutthroats. Tight lines Tahoe anglers.
