Lake trout caught | Expected to be a new state record

A lake trout believed to be a new state record was taken off Erie County May 11.

The big fish is said to have weighed 31 pounds, 13 ounces and stretched to 40 inches. It was caught by Keith Miller of Cranberry, Crawford County, on a God’s Grace Sport Fishing charter out of North East.  Captain Lane Brown said the hookup occurred at about 4:30 p.m. 3 miles offshore in water that was 42 degrees at 120 feet.

The fish was weighed and observed by a state Fish and Boat Commission official at Poor Richard’s Bait and Tackle in Fairview. Paperwork that would make the record official is expected to be confirmed by Fish and Boat in a few weeks.

The previous lake trout record of 29 pounds, 4 ounces was set in 2012.
