Mason McAbee Maintains Momentum For BAM Super 60 Championship Sunday at Clear Lake

Luke Johns Looking For A Repeat Victory

KELSEYVILLE, Calif.  – Back-to-back days at the scales with 27-plus pounds boosted Mason McAbee of Bakersfield, Calif. to the top of the Day Two leaderboard for the 2025 BAM Super 60 Pro Tour Championship at Clear Lake hosted by Konocti Vista Casino presented by Tackle Warehouse and backed by conservation sponsor Fisherman’s Warehouse.

McAbee leads the top-10 field cut as the Championship Sunday qualifier’s weights are zeroed out and they launch to compete for the season’s final day on the water to claim the grand prize package of a $65,000 Mercury-powered BassCat Boat.

With weather patterns swinging wildly, the final day is expected to bring yet another shift in conditions, but McAbee isn’t fazed. He’s hoping for the opposite of calm.

“The bite is getting better for me after 12 o’clock,” said McAbee. “I hope there is rain. I love fishing in the rain. It’s miserable to fish in; but I hope we get some nasty weather because then someone is going to weigh in a mega-bag.”

McAbee is cranking with a Strike King 6XD in varied colors – shad, craw, and even one in the bluegill family, pairing the bait with 12-pound P-Line Ultimate Fluorocarbon. His cranking setup includes a Stealth Stixx 4 Fathoms rod and a Shimano 7.5:1 reel.

“To get a crankbait down to 22 to 24-foot,” he said. “And (the Shimano’s) carbon fiber handles really help me feel the depth on that crankbait.”

He also has a minnow rigged on a Stealth Stixx Lil Pete with P-Line EndurX Zero Fade Braid and P-Line Ultimate Fluorocarbon. McAbee plans to rely on the same strategy but has his swimbait rods ready on deck.

“I’m going to keep an open mind and hit everything that looks good,” he added.

Luke Johns Charging for Back-to-Back Titles

Adding a dozen scorable bass on Day Two, Luke Johns of Folsom, Calif., secured his spot in the final-day field cut, tallying 23 total keepers over two days. As the 2024 BAM Pro Tour Champion, Johns is chasing a rare back-to-back victory.

“I love winning anything and then to win it twice and being the championship that would just be so awesome,” he said.

Despite his current position, Johns’ event didn’t kick off smoothly.

“The first day of the tournament honestly started out a little scary,” he said. “I didn’t have a fish in the boat until about 11 o’clock.”

The tide turned fast. He ended Day One with nearly 20-pounds off a single spot and, after a fog delay on Day Two, returned to that same stretch.

“It was pretty fun,” he recalled. “I had three or four non-tournament boats around me, and nobody caught a thing for like two hours. I caught like 15 right in front of ‘em.”

After the flurry, Johns spent the rest of the afternoon spot-hopping in search of bigger bites – and found one.

“There was a lot of ‘em with it; so, I definitely got some good stuff to go fishing tomorrow (for Day Three),” he added.

Johns relied on two key baits a – jighead minnow and a jerkbait.

“The jerkbait was really key for me yesterday (Day One) and it put a couple solid fish in the boat for me this morning,” he said. “Today once the wind slicked off and I was able to be a little more accurate with that presentation, I made one key adjustment a –lighter head and a smaller bait and started really catchin’ ‘em on that. That’s what I caught most of my bigger fish on today.”

He fished the jerkbait with a Daiwa Zillion baitcaster paired with a Daiwa Kage jerkbait rod, and the minnow setup included a Daiwa Tatula Elite spinning reel matched to a Daiwa Power Scope spinning rod.

“The thing I really like about that rod is it is extra short,” he said. “When you’re shaking that minnow, it is a lot of wrist movement and that thing is extremely light and does not wear you out at all.”

Johns spooled up with Sunline fishing line and fine-tuned his hardware.

“On the jerkbait, I changed out to Owner Hooks,” he said. “On the minnow, I was throwing the Owner Range Roller. It’s the best and only head I use for LiveScoping.”

With the weights zeroed and weather changes looming, everything resets for Championship Sunday. McAbee will look to hold momentum, while Johns and the rest of the top-10 field chase their final shot at the $65,000 Mercury-powered BassCat Boat and the BAM Super 60 Pro Tour champion title. On Clear Lake, where any cast can be the fish of a lifetime – one decision – or one cast – can flip it all.
