Fifth Annual "No Motor" Tournament Set for Saturday November 7,
Will Support Continued Critical Habitat Restoration at Carpinteria Salt Marsh
Valuable Prizes Including Seeker Fishing Rods, Supporting a Great Cause Will Draw Surf Anglers from Across Southern California to Santa Barbara Coast
Swarms of surf casters, kayak anglers and other fans of Southern California's near-shore angling experience will once again descend on the Santa Barbara coastline to participate in the upcoming annual "No Motor" Tournament on Saturday, November 7.
Last year's event was the biggest yet, and organizer The Sportfishing Conservancy expects a great turnout for what will be the tournament's Fifth Anniversary. What draws so many fishermen to this relaxed, family-friendly activity is the unique experience it provides — not the least of which is the opportunity to enjoy Southern California coastal fishing at a time when the weather and fishing are often at their best.
Equally compelling are the thousands of dollars worth of awards and raffle prizes provided by generous sponsors including Seeker Fishing Rods, Costa Sunglasses, Big Hammer Lures, Deep Blue SUPs, and more. The fact that his event has a five-year track record of supporting the nearby Carpinteria Salt Marsh — an important tidal marshland habitat critical for fish and other animals — is the "icing on the cake" that makes participation satisfying, as well as fun.
This event is ideal for families and anglers of all experience levels. Check-in/registration is from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. at local landmark Danny's Deli (4890 Carpinteria Avenue). Once signed up, anglers can fish anywhere they like — as long as they cast from shore or any human-powered craft including kayaks, float tubes or SUPs. Participating fishermen have until 11:30 a.m. to report back to Danny's Deli for the tallying of results and announcement of the winners during a special luncheon to follow.
The entry fee remains at only $20 and includes a "goody bag," five raffle tickets and a tasty Tri-Tip Lunch at Danny's Deli. Proceeds from entry fees and sales of additional raffle tickets will be donated to The Land Trust for Santa Barbara County, a non-profit organization dedicated to restoring the Carpinteria Salt Marsh. Delicate wetland environments such as this are vital for sustaining many birds, plants, marine animals and juvenile fishes, California halibut in particular.
This year's event will feature two separate raffles. An "anglers raffle" where participants must be present to receive prizes (including Seeker Rods, gift certificates for local stores, fishing reels, tackle and more). There will also be a Grand Prize raffle to give away a Deep Blue Stand Up Paddleboard worth approximately $2000. Tickets for this will be $25 each or $100 for five tickets, and will be available for purchase at the event as well as online via PayPal at sportfishingconservancy.org. The winner of this prize need not be present.
"We're very proud that recreational anglers have rallied around this cause and supported our tournament year after year," said Jenny Armstrong, event coordinator for The Sportfishing Conservancy. "Sport fishermen recognize the importance of restoring and protecting these shrinking habitats, as well as their direct connection to the overall health of our coastal waters and fisheries. This is an excellent opportunity for anglers and their families to enjoy a great time outdoors while they support a great cause," added Armstrong.
Here's how the 2015 No Motor Tournament will work: Unlike typical "weigh-in" tournaments, this event rewards anglers who catch the highest cumulative length of fish in inches. Catch-and-release is strongly encouraged, however anglers who choose to keep a legal-sized fish will have each two inches deducted for each fish taken. Anglers keep their own tally of fish ("selfie" photos or friend verification may be requested), and the combined length of the 10 biggest fish (any combination of species) will make up the angler's total score.
Each registered angler will be given a scorecard to keep track of six eligible coastal species — calico bass (14" minimum), sand bass (14" minimum), surf perch (5" minimum), white seabass (28" minimum) halibut (22" minimum) and corbina (no minimum length). To count, fish must meet the minimum size limits as established by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, and anglers must follow all DFW rules while participating in the No Motor Tournament.
