Fishermen and others interested in federal fishery management off the coasts of the Carolinas, Georgia and eastern Florida are reminded that opportunities to provide public comment on measures proposed for species in the snapper grouper management complex continue.

The South Atlantic Fishery Management Council will hold a public hearing today from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM at Hull's Seafood Restaurant, 111 West Granada Blvd, in Ormond Beach, Florida for on measures proposed for the commercial black sea bass pot fishery through Regulatory Amendment 16 to the Snapper Grouper Fishery Management Plan.

Public hearings also continue for the proposed designation of Spawning Special Management Zones (SMZs). The SMZs are being considered in order to enhance spawning, increase recruitment, and reduce bycatch of snapper grouper species, including speckled hind and warsaw grouper. A hearing will be held via webinar on Tuesday (tomorrow), August 18th beginning at 6:00 PM. Registration is required. During the webinar, staff will provide an overview of Snapper Grouper Amendment 36 addressing the Spawning SMZs, including the 11 candidate sites being considered by the Council. Public comment will be accepted following the presentation.

Public hearings for proposed Spawning SMZs are scheduled next week for Monday, August 24th at the Georgia DNR Coastal Resources Division Office in Brunswick, GA and Tuesday, August 25th at the Hilton Garden Inn in Daytona Beach, FL. Council staff and area Council members will be available from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM to provide information, answer questions, and take public comment.

Staff will also be collecting public input on the Council's Draft Vision Blueprint addressing long-term management of the Snapper Grouper fishery during the Amendment 36 public hearings.
