San Joaquin River Parkway Trail Construction Underway

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) and the California Department of Water Resources began construction last week on a new section of the San Joaquin River Parkway Trail. The public access project is being built on state of California property at San Joaquin Hatchery in Friant (Fresno County). The project, which is expected to be completed this fall, includes public parking and nearly one mile of trail.

Providing education and recreation along the San Joaquin River, this section of trail will begin in the town of Friant and end at the Lost Lake Recreation Area. Access will be free to the public. The project will include a new parking area located at the corner of Flemming and Friant Avenues. Trailhead parking will provide access to this new section of the San Joaquin River Parkway Trail, the San Joaquin River, the San Joaquin Hatchery, the Small Fry Children’s Trail and the San Joaquin River Restoration Program’s Salmon Conservation and Research Facility.

After the San Joaquin River Conservancy Board approved the project, the Wildlife Conservation Board granted funding for the project in accordance with the Safe Drinking Water, Water Quality and Supply, Flood Control, River and Coastal Protection Fund of 2006 (Proposition 84).
