Silverado Fisheries Base trout and salmon being raised in the fire zones have survived

We’re thankful for any piece of good news to emerge out of the Napa and Sonoma fires:

Our hatchery trout and salmon being raised in the fire zones have so far survived in good shape thanks to our dedicated fisheries staff and our wildlife officers who have provided security and safe passage.

You may remember we had to evacuate our Silverado Fisheries Base fish-rearing facility in Napa along the Silverado Trail on Monday, leaving it without power, running water or aeration. When we were finally able to return on Wednesday, expecting the worst, we instead found most of our eggs and fish doing well.

The facility right now is rearing 200,000 golden trout and incubating 100,000 kokanee salmon and Chinook salmon eggs.

The facility provides all of the salmon for the state’s inland reservoirs and lakes. Our Warm Springs Hatchery near Geyserville in Sonoma County is also under fire threat. Our staff continues to run the hatchery there at nearly full strength. The hatchery right now is raising 160,000 endangered coho salmon and 350,000 threatened steelhead for later return to the Russian River drainage.

We thank our law enforcement and fisheries staff for doing their utmost in a difficult situation to safeguard these natural resources.
