Spring's Must-Have New Items

It's spring and the bass are biting everywhere in the country. It's a great time of year to get on the water and enjoy the beautiful weather while having a chance at some excellent bass fishing for numbers and a chance at your biggest bass of the year. Many different techniques will work during the springtime and there are some new items worth looking at for your spring bassin'.

Here's a rundown of some of the best new products on the market and ready at Fisherman's Warehouse that will help you catch more bass this spring.

Soft Plastics

With many bass still around spawning areas, you will likely see some bass on beds on your next trip. Catching these fish quickly is easier with creature baits that will agitate these bass.

One cool little bait from Deps is the MS Craw, a compact crawfish imitator with plenty of rings on the body to displace water and two small claws. It's a little bait at around 2.5 inches but is perfect for a small Texas-rig for pitching to beds. It's also an ideal trailer for a finesse jig, so you can fish it in many different ways.

Another option for bedding bass is the Strike King Scounbug, another great and compact crawfish imitator. It's part of their Rage lineup, so it has flanges on the pinchers to give it more vibration as the bait moves along.

Besides pitching the Scounbug, you can do many other things with it, including fishing it on the back of a jig, on a Carolina-Rig, or on a buzzbait as a replacement to using a skirt.

The Yamamoto Yamatanuki is another cool new bait that fits into the unique style of do-nothing baits that are taking America by storm after great success in Japan. They can be rigged on standard extra-wide gap hooks and the dense plastic makes them easy to cast without adding any weight. They sink quickly and the unintimidating profile and unique fall gets bit.

Terminal Tackle

Hook and other terminal tackle items are often overlooked compared to flashy and fun lures, but they are the "nuts and bolts" of bass fishing and essential tools.

Hooks continue to improve, and the new RedLine Series from VMC is a great example. Available in all your favorite styles for drop-shot, Texas-Rigs, and Neko Rigs, they offer a strong Vanadium steel and smooth coating. They are very sharp and have an ingenious keeper that keeps them secure and organized by size, with a size indicator on each Hook-Lok.

Another cool terminal tackle item that will help you hook a few more fish is the 1st Gen Top Spin. Underspins have always been great for fishing small swimbaits because the blade gives the bait some added flash, but it's hard to fish those right along the bottom because they grab grass and don't flash where the fish are looking. That's why the Top Spin was made and the blade is on top of the bait so the fish can see it.

They come in various color options and sizes from 3/16 ounce to ½-ounce. The head colors are popular baitfish colors that perfectly match your favorite soft swimbaits or fluke-style baits.

Rods and Reels

Now that you have some new baits to try, there are plenty of new rods and reels on the market as well.

The Abu Garcia Revo lineup has been around for quite a while now and they are now on their fifth generation of baitcast reels at several different price points. An excellent all-around reel that has proven itself in each edition is the Revo STX Fifth Generation baitcaster.

The new STX is light, strong, and part of the redesign was for better ergonomics. It has 25 lbs of drag and comes in a 6.7:1 and 8.1:1 gear ratio in both left and right-handed retrieves.

St. Croix is one of the most-respected rod brands and has always made excellent bass fishing rods. However, one of their newer lineups was built specifically for bass fishing. The Bass-X series are durable, lightweight, and sensitive: three must-haves for bass rods.

The rods have a technique-specific model for many popular bass techniques, from finesse spinning rods to big swimbait rods. Each of them is dialed in perfectly for the technique and the rods feature either a full or split grip, changing where it makes sense for the technique. They are priced fairly (around $120) and feature a 5-year warranty.

We all look forward to spring bass fishing every year, as it's one of the best times to be on the water. It's also a great time to experiment with new gear, as you may find a new favorite bait, piece of terminal tackle, or rod and reel.
