There’s Still Time to Get Casting

There’s Still Time to Get Casting

We just returned from an amazing trip to Lake of the Woods in Ontario, where we captured eight different species of fish, despite the fact that we focused primarily on smallmouth bass. As you can see from the video below, we were very successful in that regard (including a best five that weighed 25 pounds the last day) but we managed to also land muskies and pike and walleyes and other finned targets along the way. Our only regret (as just about always occurs) was that we should have stayed longer. I’m sure we’ll be going back, so if you’re interested in heading up there (after it thaws in the late spring — although there’s also an ice fishing option) shoot me an email and let’s get the ball rolling on your trip.

That doesn’t mark the end of our fishing year by any means. We’re headed to Missouri in early October for the Bass Fishing Hall of Fame induction ceremony. It’s open to the public with a ticket purchase, and there’s LOTS to do in the area. Even if you cannot attend, there’s an online auction chock-full of special and one-of-a-kind items that you can bid on. All of the proceeds go to conservation efforts. We plan to stick around for a couple of days to fish on beautiful Table Rock Lake with our friend Chad Morgenthaler.

In November, we’ll be heading back to the Gulf of Chiriqui in Panama for Round Three of popping for giant yellowfin tuna. Actually, that’s too simple of a description — tuna are the main event, but there should also be billfish, mahi and a host of inshore species around. As of the time of this writing, we are surprised to have EXACTLY ONE spot left on this amazing trip, so if you have some vacation time to burn don’t hesitate to jump on it. We make it easy for you — a couple of sets of clothes and a soft-sided cooler to bring home some tuna is all that you need to bring. I’m sure we’ll be back in the future, but we’ll be the first group of the ‘22-23 season into camp and last year at that same time Captain Shane and his team put us on variety and some GIANTS. Again, email me or call me at (703) 932-6299 if you want to explore grabbing this last spot.

I have a finite number of rooms for Anglers Inn Lake El Salto when we return May 27-June 3 of 2023. I hate to pressure people eight months in advance, but the demand has shown no sign of letting up. The rooms will all be filled one way or another, so if you’d like to go with us please reach out soon. Obviously, I can book you at other times at El Salto and/or Picachos, but if you want to join us, act now!

Don’t forget Alaska, either. Bear Trail Lodge is already mostly booked for next summer with repeat clients. We’ll be spending 4-5 days there and hopefully tacking on a halibut trip to the front or back end. Every outdoorsman and outdoorswoman — actually, every American — needs to make that trip at least once.

Finally, it’s not trip related, per se, but my husband is becoming obsessed with swimbaits and other big bass baits and trying to learn everything he can about them. By the time you read this we’ll be getting ready for the Swimbait Universe Gathering in our home state of Virginia. I need to go to make sure he doesn’t spend all of our travel money on the “hype baits” he’s been learning about on the internet. In the meantime, here are some of his recent videos about the ones that he already owns:

That’s all for now, but there’s lots more news coming soon. Please continue to send your feedback on the website and let us know what information you crave. We hope to see you on the water!
