REDDING, Calif. – Nick Wood and Justin Gordon topped the leaderboard of the Wild West Bass Trail (WWBT) California Teams second stop of the 2017 season at Lake Shasta on Saturday, Feb. 18. With record-breaking attendance of 181 competing teams, Wood and Gordon bested the field with a seven-fish limit that weighed 18.57, claiming a $10,000 cash award of the nearly $60,000 event payout.

“We went to the back of a creek and started throwin’ an A-rig in the morning,” said Wood. “We knew there was good fish in there. We saw them last week in a tournament.”

The team added another lure to their arsenal for the day – one that was credited for the WWBT Pro/Am victory by Ryan Friend last month – the float-n-fly. Wood made the feat sound simple.

“Never in my life had I caught a fish on a float-n-fly and neither had Justin,” he said. “We always threw big swimbaits and stuff like that. Today was the first day we ever threw that thing and on the first cast I caught a good one and Justin caught a good one. We stayed in that whole area with a float-n-fly and we won. Nothing huge, just solid fish.”

The team’s biggest bass weighed in at 2.94. Their payout included contingency dollars from Ranger Cup, Lowrance and Yamamoto Baits.

2nd Peirson/Peirson

Shane Peirson and Tom Peirson took the runner-up position for their seven bass that went 18.41 and included a big fish contender at 5.08.

The Peirson team’s efforts earned $6,605, which included one of the five Yamamoto Toad of the Day awards of $905 and contingency dollars from Dobyns Rods and Costa Sunglasses.

3rd Letterman/Rains
