1980-82 150 hp Johnson Evinrude problem

Post by Greg_Cornish »

Just mounted one of these on my boat. Near factory compression. It starts great and idles fantastic. I took it out on the maiden voyage and it will only kick up to 2500 RPM. Its not lugging and not missing. Good spark. Its plenty of engine for my boat and I think its propped right. It doesn't get up to the speed my 75 did. Mechanic thinks it might be carbs. Any other things I should check?

Someone suggested power packs, What are power packs?

The power pack is part of the electrical system.

Hey Greg,
If you are like me you don't want to pay $80-110 per hr, there is a guy in Clear Lake in Lake Port, his name is Dave 707-262-0600, he works out of his house for half the price, he rebuilt my 1986 175 merc all 6 cyl and pistons and I been running it for the last 2 years, I am having him put new seals in my lower unit in 2 weeks. Give him a call, if not go to the boat dock but that is in Disco bay delta but Robert over there is the best but its 110.00 per hr 925-634-5761. I have 2 boats, I had sort of the same problem with my 1986 Yamaha but it would shake like crazy at 1500 rpm and not go over 8 mph but it started and idled like perfect, the compresion was perfect, the spark was perfect, the fuel was perfect, it turned out to be the over rev protector so if you hit a stump and your prop come up it will not shoot to 7000 rpm and blow up, Boat dock fixed it and its running perfect.
Good luck, I hate boat motor problems, it keeps us from the toadies!

HeHe, That's where I bought it and that's where it is now. Trouble is he works outside so I have to wait for nice weather. '-) I just like to get some opinions so I can narrow it down and not throw parts at it.

I been dealing with him on and off for a while now.

Man I forgot about the outside thing, It took 3 times as long as it normally would have to rebuild my 175 merc because he had to work outside, talk about learning patience.

But he charged me 3 times less than a shop so 3 times longer is worth 3 times less money:) I have a wife and 3 kids at home.

Good luck buddy and see you on the water.
