My tach will stop working and the check engine light comes on,the tach will start working but the light stays on.By turning my ignition switch on and off three times it will show a code of p 1693 Has anyone had this problem or know what that code means?
Not looking foward to paying a mechanic if it is a sensor or something that I could do myself.
Thanks,Mike Carlton

Re: 2000 dodge diesel code
Code P-1693 is set when a DTC (diagnostic trouble code) is detected in a companion module. In other words the PCM (powertrain control module) has detected a DTC in the ECM (engine control module) or ECM has detected a fault code in the PCM.
If this code was read with a low budget code reader you will get no details. You need to talk to it with a good scan tool that can talk with the ECM, PCM, BCM, etc.
The issue with Chrysler is that there are several modules that all communicate over a common buss.
The tach not working when the light is on is a good sign of a failing crank sensor as that is where the RPM signal comes from.
