Aluminum Engine???

are you talking about the new Toyota Tundra truck? It supposedly has an aluminum engine, but I thought I saw an ad saying the cylinders for the pistons are still steel.......How good is that? I don't know, but time will tell. toyota I 'm sure does lots of testing on stuff like this....

Ford has been using stainless steel sleeves in their cast iron engines for years, so sleeves aren't a new technology. I'm sure other manuf. have, too.
I have to believe aircraft engines have been made out of aluminum, or some other light metal, too.
If they can make an aluminum engine for bass boats, think how much lighter they'd be, and how much less gas we'd burn. And how much more fishing crap we could cram into our boats with the extra weight to play with.

The Chevy Vega had an aluminum engine way back in 1975 (the Corvair had aluminum engine components as well) . They were prone to failure as the rapid heating and cooling of the motor made the aluminum brittle. Aluminum engines and engines components have been around since the end of WWII, and are gaining a following again because if the weight savings (gas savings) they can provide, especially in diesels.

Wow, someone remembers the ole Vega besides myself, that's why I brought it up. I had one, it was a gas saver but had engine problems after a while.

It had automatic oil changes. You added a quart of oil every 100 miles from warped heads. Oh the Vega memories! But there was a special Cosworth engine Vega, that was the good one!

Has aluminum heads and I believe the block is also aluminum. It has been a good motor so far. Knock on wood!

all motorcycle engines are alumn. the high performance ones have a ceramic cylinder wall.
they dissapate heat way more effeciently.

less heat = better performance.
