Anybody use Braided line on a spinning reel?

Post by SoCalBassAssassin »

I have been using braided on my casting reels for a while now, and it casts so smooth I love it! I was wondering if anyone uses it on their spinning reels? I have always used mono on the spinning reels. I used to use mono on my casting reeal. Since I have been using the braid on the casting reels, I was thing it would really perform well on a spinning reel also..

Any comments?

Yes, I do use 10 lb braid on a spinning reel. I use a Fluorocarbon leader. It works very well and cast just fine.

I've been doing so for about a year and a half now. I use a Uni-to-Uni knot, and it has eliminated the effects of line twist completely. Love it!

How much of each line do you put on (Braid vs. Leader). I have a couple spinning rods that I never use that I would like to give this a try. Drop-shotting on spinning gear sucks.. Thats why I like my Shimano 51MG

Fill the spool with 10# PowerPro or Spiderwire braid, then just use a topshot of 8-12' flourocarbon. I usually use 6# around here for worming, or 8# for fishing a Senko or shakey head. On lakes where you can upsize I'll usually go up to a 10# leader.

That's one of the best features - you can change on the fly and as the situation dictates.

Saul,
I do it the same way Roger is explaining it. 10lb power pro, 6 - 10lb leader with a double uni. When using the 10 lb leader I usually make it a bit shorter then the length of the rod so if I break off my hook I don't have to re-tie the whole leader. I learned this method from Kelly Ripa and it has been great for me....

You drop shot on a bait caster :? anyway I use braid on some of my spinning gear as well but do not use a mono or fluoro leader....why do you do this... I havent come across a reason to do so... just curious.....

I use Daiwa uncoated 8-strand Samurai 15lb. that is 2lb. diameter and is as smooth as silk....literally. Uni to Uni is the best attachment for me with a 6-8ft. flouro leader (I don't like the knot connection in the spool). Super sensative and casts a mile.....awesome rig for sure. Because of the tiny diameter it handles really well in windy conditions....less of a bow so you are more direct to your bait and like I said before....super sensative so you can still detect a bite even if the wind is howling and you do have a bit of a bow, the sensativity is also great for deep vertical winter worm fishing. The Samurai green color lasts way longer (it may lighten up a tad after a season of use not after 5 or 6 trips) to keep you confident that the lighter color isn't "giving something away" to the fish......the less doubt in their tiny mind the better  . You can always "flip" your braid around after a season if you want.....now your "new" again so it really doesn't cost as much as you may initially think....I recommend you try the Samurai......you won't be sorry ....go get them! :D

Drop shot on a baitcaster is mu favorite.
Calcutta 50 with a calcutta 100 reel handle is an awesome set up.
Been doing it for years now.
Much more versatile rig.

It has been my experience that whenever using a baitcaster for Dropshot, you had better have nothing less than 7lb test on it due to the lack of a smooth start up of the drag system on baitcasters (that includes the aftermarket Carbontex drags as well). If you're using a light line (say 5lb or 4.5lb Sunline) at DVL or any other clear water impoundment, you give yourself a much better chance of landing a good size fish if you're using a spinning reel as their drags start up much smoother and have less risk of line breakage during a surge. For the last 3 years I have been using 24lb Sunline Super PE Braid with a 6-8 foot leader of 10lb shooter while at Clear Lake and it's never failed me. I have also tried the above mentioned Daiwa Samurai Braid (which is much easier to find compred to the Sunline braid) and I must say that the Samurai braid from Daiwa is great stuff!!!! I always use straight fluorocarbon when I'm using 6lb or less as I like to have that little stretch that fluoro offers compared to the braid. Good luck and I think you will see that with the proper lines and knots (very important here) you will have great success and less hassles with line loops and wind knots by using the braid to fluoro set up.
