Re: anyone own a tr21
I'm on my 5th one and will never fish out of another boat. Are you looking at a used one? if so what year. And if you are looking to go new the 21X2 is probably the best riding boat on the market. If you are looking at the TR series NEW you will be blown at the changes and speed.
21X2 w/Mercury 250 Pro XS we are seeing 72-73 Average with tournament load. (8" Bobs Hydraulic and 26 Tempest Prop)
TR-21X HP w/Mercury 250 Pro XS we are seeing 77-78 Average with tournament load. (8" Bobs Hydraulic and 27 Tempest Prop)
The Pre X series boats from 97-04 are very simular in speed to the TRX HP series boats. A 21 rigged with a 225 should run in the low to mid 70's.
Any one you go with you cant go wrong, Triton builds a great boat..
And as far Pro's and Con's
Pro's----Handling, Speed, Holeshot, Storage, Warranties and Re-sale value.
Con--- Learning how to drive a High Performance Boat. But when you do you'll never go back.
P.S. take the one your looking at for test drive......

Re: anyone own a tr21
'04 Tr21X with 225 Opti, 26 Tempest +
Pros: Stable fishing platform, huge front deck, tons of room, looks great on the water and the trailer, loads/unloads easily, easy access to batteries and pumps in bilge, fast
Cons: have to learn to drive it, it will walk at about 67 mph, 225 Opti struggles a little with full livewells, full gas, and 3 people, I've heard the Tr21 is worse for this than the X boats but mine takes awhile to get on plane when so loaded
That's it. Overall, I love the boat, my wife loves the boat and we couldn't be happier. She won't let me drive it over 60 so I never worry about the chinewalk but when I've been out by myself, I can kinda get the feel for it and with seat time I think I could figure it out.
You won't be dissappointed. They are great boats.

Also, I've ridden in a 21 X2. Even more of all my pros!

Chinewalk is a thing of the past with seat time. It's definatly a feel thing not a jerk left or right thing. Once you learn it you never expierience it again. If your having a holeshot issue remove 1 or 2 of your exhaust caps at the base of the prop. That should help out alot and if it doesn't work try a Trophy Plus 26 with 1 plug out, you'll hop right out of the water.

Contact Ralph Harkins, he is a fellow Nutcase and is on the Triton Staff. You could also contact Kent Brown, another fellow Nutcase. I think you can click on the Ultimate Bass link above and get his contact information.
Don't ask about my username, all I need to say is check yours and check them often.

Re: anyone own a tr21
I have a '99 TR21 (purchased in '00) w/ a 225 FICHT. The '00 you are considering didn't have too many changes if my memory serves me correctly. Mainly cosmetic such as the carpet in the back went to the gunnels where on the '99 there was 2" of gelcoat. The TR21 is a great boat. I don't know how the transferability of the warranty worked on the '00, but the '99's were lifetime to the original owner and 10 years to the 2nd owner if sold in the first 5 years. This warranty jump started the mfgrs to offer transferable lifetime warrantys in subsequent years.
If the warranty is not transferable, I would not hesitate to buy the boat. If it is in good condition it will last longer than you will own it. I did get some spider cracking in some areas on my boat (white topcap), but does not effect the boat and would not worry about it.
Having sung the praises of my Triton, if I was in the market for that vintage year of boat most of the mfgrs made very good and durable boats ie. Ranger, Basscat. The one mfgr that had some issues was Stratos. I looked at a 20ss Extreme and they had some hulls that made the boat hook to one side. Stratos either replaced the hulls or exchanged the boats for the larger 21SS Extreme.
After taking the boat for a test drive and looking at it you should have a pretty good idea if there are any problems.
Now to the item that is the roll of the dice...the motor. I have the FICHT which everyone will bash. But it is still running and it just came back from Boatmasters with a clean bill of health. The Optimax had its share of issues as did most of the DFI's. So make sure you take it or any boat/motor to a good mechanic to check it out. Most if not all the DFI's had an on board computer that will tell you how many hours and at what % of the hours it was run in different rpm ranges along with error codes for the life of the engine.
If the boat is well maintained, you like the layout, the motor checks out with a mechanic and the price is competitive & in your price range go for it.
Happy boat shopping.
Scott
