back up camera

Post by Randy Walker »

Hey All,
Wondering if anybody out there has installed an aftermarket back up camera to their truck.
I've done a bunch of research on brands, styles, hard wired vs wireless, screen size...looking for something that will not break the bank but do it's job...

Looking for good and bad so I know what to stay away from..

Thanks in advance for any info/details you can provide....

Randy

Hey Randy Ive installed one on my 2010 Dodge ram. My stereo has a out put for video. I bought a cheap backup camera off ebay and installed it in a couple hours. Pretty awesome. I dont have to do any pushing on the tongue anymore. I back right up to the trailer and drop it right on.

I tried two wireless ones and both did not work worth a damn (intermittent signals) . There is too much steel in the way for a clear signal from the camera to the monitor. Get hard wired to be sure it will work. (there are FCC rule limiting the signal power, so I imagine that it might not work unless the transmitter and receiver have line of sight).

When I bought a Tundra, it came prewired for a backup camera to the rearview mirror. I had to replace the rearview mirror with one with little screen in the mirror. The camera installed into a hole drilled into the latch plate. I really like having it. Can't see anything backing up since I have a Snugtop Shell. With the backup camera, I can line up the hitch and see everything behind me in parking lots.

Awesome investment!!!

Hope this helps!
