What brand of swimbaits did they carry? I just recently moved from Redding to McKinleyville and can't find any good shops on the coast. I couldn't even find 1/0 Gammy trebles last time i checked. Haven't been to the shop you're talking about though. Only the two in Valley West. Do they have a selection of Lucky Craft?
P.S. Freshwater Lagoon is fun!

I'm curious of what good swim baits will do up there. As a graduate of the fisheries program at Humboldt, I know of zero bass at FW Lagoon that eat trout, I've done enough stomach sampling to prove it. Now if I were a three spined stickleback I'd be worried. The bass are stunted in Ruth. That leaves Trinity Lake?

Hey Chris, nothing personal but you are kinda not thinking outside of the box. The bass fishery at Ruth indeed is stunted, at least it used to be, but its come a long way. If'n ya think there arent big swimbait eatin bass at Ruth, and if'n ya think the same about Freshwater, then I know a bunch of people that would be stoked on that. Make sure you tell your friends that these bass dont eat swimbaits cause you never found a trout in their stomachs!

Redwood Marine is not a good place, I would never spend a penny there.

I'm on my way to a fisheries degree myself. However, I'm also a tournament bass fisherman. I can't tell you how many 3 to 4.5 lb. bass I've caught at Freshwater on 7 in. swimbaits. When we say, "swimbaits" we aren't always trying to imitate trout. Have you heard of the color scheme Ayu? Definately not a trout color but deadly at FW.

That is 100% Correct, No bass in Freshwater Lagoon....

To all of you who have a North Coast Bass connection, I'm Dan, just graduated with BS in Fisheries Biology, hopefully coming back up for my Masters in Spring.

I and a group of fellow fish kids, kids have the basis of a bass club up there and we fish Freshwater regularly.

So if there are any fellow Humboldt students (if your not in Fisheries Biology, shame on you!)

Jason,

Mad River Outfitters are the guys to buy from. obviously they dont have the selection of a "real" tackle shop, but the guys are awesome. Tip, keep an eye on the 60% off bin in the front of the store, when they fill it up, half of it is bass stuff, some good stuff some not so good, but there is always gonna be something!

Redwood marine is starting to get a good supply of bass gear, they have alot more than they used to. The spro and lucky craft swimbaits work pretty good at freshwater. They work pretty good at Ruth and Trinity also. White swimbaits work good at Freshwater also.

Yes swimbaits work at freashwater :x .Duh! They work anywhere there are bass. From the sounds of it they are working for lots of you. Sure you can have some good days on swimbaits. I really think a guy is better off throwing standard bass tackle up there. So lets here it "What is the biggest swimbait fish that you have personaly seen come out of freashwater" we've all heard the 10#er stories. personaly I'm calling bull $#!+ on the 10#ers. I have been fishing for bass there for close to 15 years and pretty hard core for about the last 5. I have never even seen a fish I could honestly say was over 7. I have seen a picture of a weighed 8#er that was caught about 10 years ago.

Agreed Seth,

I've caught fish that are 5+, the largest confirmed fish is in the HSU fish collection, it was electroshocked during a Fisheries Techniques class taught by the now retired Terry Roelofs, that fish was about 7.5 if memory serves me correctly.

There are legends of 10+ pounders coming out of there, (maybe 20 years ago, that's about 10 years after the Orick residents brought fish from Ruth and illegally planted them there.

I've talked to people who have fished there for many moons and they've said that 10 years ago, you could maybe catch a 6 or 7 pounder every few outings, but nothing above that.

From the size of the fish caught, I believe there are still a few fish that are 6, maybe 7 lbs, but that is a big female that is full of eggs.

I also agree with the use of the regular gear, hell yes creaturebaits, frogs and spinnerbaits and stuff like that will outshine any swimbait most of the time.

The best thing about catching them on a trout swimbait is showing those uppity trout fishermen that Bass are higher on the food chain! :P :P :P

If you want some good huge fish stories go see those idiots at Arcata Tackle, next to the dollar store, according to those guys, they catch a couple of fish over 8 lbs every spring. To put that in perspective, they also advise their clients that the very expensive, deep diving crankbait on their store shelf, is the best lure for the lagoon bass.

And one more thing Seth, you have all of my respect, a fisherman that doesn't lie or exagerate his big bass catches (at least not alot! ) is a good guy in my book.

All the best,

Keep Typ'in, my son's reading this from HSU...He's caught a 5'lb'ner early spring/senko fish. He wants to fish Ruth, but they have warned him of the pot growers using the water from the lake and the mine fields that they set.

They just busted a field 10 miles out of town that was huge.

Hey BassmanDan. I went to HSU for 1 year in 83. I can't remember much  , but do remember what a great guy Terry Roeloffs was as well as Professors Bob Kelly and Chip Cannon who taught a flycasting course for 1 credit! Bob Kelly convinced me that I'd be better off as a business major . So I transferred to Sac State...and I intend to thank him for it some day. Is he still in the health ed. dept?

I used to get razzed badly about being a bass guy in steelehead country. But I took the flycasting course and showed em I wasn't one dimensional. Hahaha. I actually found a secret PG&E lake up there that was loaded with huge trout and I honed my flyfishing skills there weekly.

Anyway, The New Outdoor Store in Arcata carried some decent bass tackle. I converted Tom (who I think still works there) into becoming a bass fisherman and order more bass tackle. If any of you HSU folks go there, tell Tom I said hi. He has turned into a real good bass fisherman and knows Ruth lake very well. He's also a good stick on Clear Lake.

BTW...I never inhaled

New "Outdoor Store", is that the name of the place? If so, where the hell is it?

If its "Arcata Tackle" in Valley West, sorry those guys are a bunch of clowns, maybe I haven't met your friend, but they have some seriously bogus fish tales and really they come off as not knowing what they are talking about!

Now I'm confused :?

The only place I know on the plaza is "The Outdoor Store" and I'm pretty sure they don't carry fishing stuff. Other than that, it could be just tunnel vision, I avoid the plaza like the plague and maybe I just can't see past all the bums and hippies to see bass stuff :P :P

Well whatever!!!!!

Well, per my post...that was back in the 80's. So it is no longer the "New" Outdoor store. I've seen Tom a few times at Clear Lake and I thought he told me he still worked there. Maybe not because it's been a few years since I have seen him.
Sounds like the Outdoor store gave up on fishing stuff. They used to carry a pretty good selection of steelhead/salmon stuff. And once I converted Tom...he started buying a bunch of bass stuff to sell from Phil Grunert from Weastern Hogue (wholesaler).

Well anyway, it had a pretty good selection of bass stuff at one time.

I guess those days are passed. And by the way...them hippies have been there forever. They are harmless. They are too stoned to be any trouble to you. LOL!

Peace man!

Yeah,
Phil is the sporting good rep for Longs (my bass buddy works there) We have actually raided Phil's sports catalog to special order a few things!

Outdoor Store is not primarily Surf/Skate/Bike kinda stuff now, but maybe there still is fishing stuff, I'll have to check it out!

The Outdoor Store is on the plaza in Arcata, There other store is on 4th street in Eureka and this is where Tom works now. The upstairs is where you will find the fishing gear. Tom is very knowledable in the bass department. Him and his partner Brian are good friends of mine. If Tom does not have it he can get it.

I have been reading all the posts about who has the best selection of Bass gear in Eureka/Arcata and I went to a couple of them today and found that Redwood Marine does have the best selection of stuff and they had good prices, comparable to Cabelas and Bass Pro. They asked me to give them feed back on anything else they should carry. If anyone has time check them out

I agree Redwood Marine does have the best selection and great prices, and they're still adding more. They have a great selection of soft plastics as well as hooks and weights. Be sure to talk to the new guy because he knows his stuff. And check out the River2Sea swimbaits they're awesome.
