The pilot mini-series first aired in '03 on the Sci-Fi Channel where the show has lived until it's final episode aired on friday. It starred Academy Award winners Edward James Olmos and Mary McDonnell and won 2 Emmy awards plus numerous other awards while it was on the air.
There is the original mini-series, 4 seasons of episodes, a movie called "Razor" and another movie due out this fall.
A Prequel series called "Caprica" will be released on DVD in April and will premiere on the Sci-Fi Channel in the fall.
Some folks might remember the cheesy show from 1978 or 1979 by the same name starring Lorne Greene, Richard Hatch and Dirk Benedict. It was essentially a Star Wars rip-off for TV.
This new version was VERY different. It was dark, dirty, harsh and realistic with characters full of hope only to have their hopes snuffed out week after week. A story of genocide at the hands of machines that man had created to serve them.
It wasn't made for kids. There were no cute puppies on the show. They weren't selling "Happy Meals" at McDonalds. It was science fiction for adults. And it was FRAKKING GREAT!!!!
So rent the mini-series from your local video store or thru Netflicks. If you like it, enjoy the series. It was a helluva ride.
