On Sunday, 2/27/21 So Cal Kayak Anglers (SCKA) held their annual membership drive tournament on Lower Otay Reservoir located in San Diego County. 55 anglers came out to enjoy the beautiful southern California weather and some winter bass fishing. The day started out a little cold but warmed up to 72 degrees with blue bird skies and winds up to 10mph. Water temperature was reported to be 62 degrees with 3 to 4 feet of clarity.

The bite proved to be tougher than expected with only 17 anglers submitting a 5 fish limit. Fish were reported to be in the 15 to 20-foot range with the tule lines producing a more consistent bite. Dropshot and the Neko Rig were the primary patterns.

Johnny Bayard of San Marcos, CA secured the winning limit of 86.75 inches anchored by a solid 18.75-inch bass. Big Fish of the tournament was a 19 incher caught by Michael Hsu of Culver City, CA.

Up next for SCKA is their regular season opener on San Vincente Reservoir on Saturday, 3/13/21. This will be their first West Coast Championship qualifier event. Per SCKA veteran, Steve Buechner, the fish should be up if the warming trend continues that could make for a great bite.
