For the regular size I go with a 3/0. The way I rig it is I will go down about 4 lips or ridges what ever you want to call those sections. This puts the eye of the hook pretty far down into the bait which I feel helps with prevent the bait bunching up down at the bottom of the hook causing lost fish.

I hope this helps!

Rich, I use the same size Gamakatsu or Owner EWG hooks with success.

I switched from EWG's to offset round bend a while ago.... better hook ups and a little extra life outta each bait......

3/0 on the standard and 5/0 on the double wide............. IMO the 5/0 offset round bend on the double wide is critical.... that bait always wants to roll up over the hook w EWG's causing A LOT of missed fish

better yet,, just hang one on yer Wadda, Rodstrainer, or Bobby D and never look back :D

one more vote for the BMF Hooks!

When used where it should be, there is no better hook on the planet, the barb is great (you can do the same with some cheaper heat shrink tubing from the hardware store). A 3/0 "barbed" BMF is a great hook for Yamamoto Flappin Hogs when t-rigged.

For Beavers I exclusively use a screw-in weight Florida rig and a 4/0 BMF, I can't count how many fish I've caught and said, "Look at that hook, center of the top lip!" The screw keeps the hook from pulling out the top of the bait and allows a solid hook set with out jerking your arm off.
If you're using a screw in weight, attach the hook with a snell, it's a much more solid attachment than a Trilene knot (or god forbid...a Palomar!)

Alot of people will use the BMF's with only heavy braid or mono, but I will fish it (with almost 100% efficiency) down to 15 lb line and it performs perfect every time!

I just can't help but share my good words about that hook,

BMF Hook X3......

3/0 will work with standard sized beavers and 5/0 for the double wide beavers. If you're flippn the thick gnarly stuff make sure to snell the hook instead of tying a palomar or uni knot...WAAAAY better hook up ratio IMHO. It allows the hook to curl up like a scorpion's tail, and you'll hook 90+% of your fish in the hood of their mouths. Alot of pros..including Andre Moore who designed the hook use the snell on the straight shanked hooks like the BMF. This(along with braided line) allow you to swing for the fences...SET THE HOOK....smaller fish will come flying out of the water usually on the initial hookset when flippin.....Hahahahaha. The eye of the hook is welded shut so braided line cannot slip out...best flippin hook around...it was pretty much made for the RI Beavers..

Not to make a thread jacking or anything, but can anyone explain on how to tie a snelled hook? It was shown to me a few years ago when I was being taught how to punch but I forgot how to do it.

I also like the BMF hooks except what i do is thread the hook down into the beaver further where the eye is in the end and then i stick a tooth pick through the eye of the hook , and put a small drop of glue on it . Just trim the tooth pick off each side flush where it sticks out and your good to go .
I saw it once on a Don Iovino video where he was dropshotting worms it holds the baits in place well .

The toothpick thing sounds like it would work, but seems like alot of trouble to go to. If you're gonna get the BMF hooks then get the barbs that they make for that hook also: http://www.tacklewarehouse.com/descpage ... IBMFB.html .All you do is heat 'em up with a lighter and you're good to go. your bait will stay in place all day. the barb isn't recommended with a snelled hook though. It kinda gets in the way.

Jason....
Snelling the hook is super easy and effective for positive hooksets. Here's a diagram for ya:
http://www.floridasportsman.com/HowTo/k ... lhook2.jpg
Remember to always snell the curved(hook) side of the BMF not the back side of the hook...very important!

Thanks for the link Alex. It pretty much just a uni knot but on the shank of the hook!

try this on for size... I like to use a Gami EWG 4/0.. what i do is i rig it side ways.. by that i mean, i thread the hook texas style like you would normally however I go about 3 ribs down and pull it on the side of the bait and then burry the hook point back into the bait towards the opposite side of the bait and skin hook into the rib of the bait.. not sure i explained it correctly but if i knew how to post pics,, i would.. anyways, normally the bait is rigged with the hook down the middle of the bait,, this method, the hook sorta lays flat on the front of the bait but the hook is burried slightly into the front of the bait.. the bait is tough so you dont have to dig the point back in to deep, just go back in enought that its not exposed.. i guess a better way to explain is, lay the bait flat on the table, then just lay your EWG on top of the bait and you will get the idea..
I figured this out one day on the delta as i kept missing bites rigging the beaver the standard way.. so i tried other ways and the sideways rig seem to increase my hookup ratio.. try it out.

good luck..

for puching i use a bobber stopper to secure the weight. a lot easier than the toothpick method

Bob is right...the bobber stopper is key...so easy to put on..and adjustable depending on the thickness of the cover you're fishing...

Bob and Alex,
He was talking about putting the toothpick through the eye of the hook to help keep the beaver up in place. Useing a bobber stopper or toothpick to peg a weight wont do anything to keep it up

Would the BMF hook be good for punching mats with the sweet beavers?
