Best Shimano low profile swim bait reel and rod for my need?

Post by Cal Bassin »

Right now my swim bait rig is a Shimano CU300DSV with 65lb spectra braid, and CRCXS711MH. It works well and I am pleased with the combo, the pole is rated for smaller lures.... but good so far. I throw 7" and 9" slammers, and Hud Deluxe's, BBZ's and 3:16 wake baits. What I would like to improve on is casting distance. I don't want to give up line strength, but I do want to be able to chuck the larger lures farther, without pro tangle errors.

I'm sure a CRCS711H would help, but what reel? I like my CU300DSV, but want more cast distance for shore fishing the ninja lakes.

The H or XH works well with the heavier lures like the Hudd, BBZ and 3:16 wake baits.

I use the H rated rod for Hudd 12/16, BBZ, 3:16 Wake Jr., Rago Rat, 7" Triple Trout...

The XH is better for the Hudd 5, 3:16 Wake Bait (full size), 10" Triple Trout and other baits that are 5+ ounces or that require a stouter action.

I think you will notice that the heavier rods will handle the heavier baits much better and your casting distance should improve.

Thanks for the info..... So you think I should stick with my CU300? I think I will upgrade to the XH rod, or at least have two set ups, since all I do is swim baits these days.

How did the ICAST go? By the way, your guy sent me an e-mail back regarding work options at Shimano.... hope to hear back from him soon.

I did not go to ICAST this year but we did well winning several awards.

The Curado 300 and Calcutta TE300/400 is all I use. I have been using the Curado 300 more and more. I think all my swimbait rods now have Curados now. I still combat fish from the shore with my CTE's here and there.
