Ryan Cook Strikes it Rich in the Motherlode!

While many are relaxing this Labor Day weekend, Ryan Cook is out catching big limits of bass on the Motherlode lakes. The late summer to early fall transition can be a difficult time to locate quality fish, but Ryan has managed to figure them out.

He started out Friday evening with a quick trip to Lake McClure. Within 5 minutes he had boated a 9-pound 4-ounce Tank on a Super Spook. The fish hammered the bait shallow on a main lake point. To add to the excitement, she jumped four times before making it to the boat. For the next three hours, he continued to boat quality fish on topwater, jigs and finesse worms on a darthead. Most bites came in 10 to 30 feet of water. The best 5 fish went 21 pounds, not bad for a 3-hour trip on Lake McClure.

Next up was a day trip to New Melones Reservoir on Sunday. No big topwater fish on this trip but a solid 20 plus pound limit. Ryan reports steady action on jigs and underspins. He was targeting windblown main lake points. Most bites came in 10 to 35 feet of water (very similar to McClure). The underspin bite has been very productive for Ryan on New Melones this year. Ryan advised that making bottom contact with the bait is key. “If you are not willing to get snagged, you are not going to get bit”.
