cost effective = new engine
new engines will get much better fuel economy, have more usable power and depending on how many stars are allowed on more lakes.

Besides the seizure damage to the pistons and bores it likely has rod and crank shaft damage. After it's rebuilt it's still a used engine with a used lower unit, trim and tilt, starter........ blah, blah, blah..

I have an auto repair shop, I see this all the time. I have a question for you.
Lets just say you are 80 years old.
You have a bad heart, you get one from an eight year old.
My question is, How Old Are You?

a new motor is sort of out of the question its on a 86 390 V s a new motor would me worth more than the boat itself. but the main problem is the money, or lack thereof. have trouble paying rent, truck, boat, gas and new rods and reels im hoping a rebuild will be inexpensive

Hey Barse41,

I had my 1986 175 merc done by a guy in Clear Lake named David Robinson 707-262-0600, he put 6 new pistons and had 4 cylinders resleaved for a lot lot less than the bay area, the crazy thing is I was his V6 guini pig, he had done streight 6's and lots of 1, 2, 3, 4 & 6 cylinders but no V6's, I was the first and my boat has been running for 2 years now and I just had him put a new seal in my lower unit, I pulled the lower unit off and he just did the seal for $30.00:) and I put the lower unit back on. I am just like you, I have a 6 year old, and 4 year old twins, I either do it my self or on a budget and don't do it at all.

Good luck my friend!

Just a "ballpark" figure .... I cracked my #1 Piston on an '98 Johnson 88SPL hitting a sandbar in Big Break -- And it was gona be $4500 just for the new block. :?

Been in your shoes and it is not preaty at all !

I ended up selling that boat (I actually miss the original DeltaDestroyer alot !! ) for $2800 to a duckhunter that has plans on it for this comming season.

There are options out there -- We went in the direction of upgrading -- and we are more blessed for just fishing from it. Still gotta figure out how I am gona hunt Pheasants and Ducks this season on the Delta. :(
You know, we always called each other goodfellas. Like, you'd say to somebody: "You're gonna like this guy; he's all right. He's a goodfella. He's one of us." You understand? We were goodfellas, wiseguys.

A guy here in Lodi rebuilt my entire motor on my 96 Merc 150 for $3000. Now my 03 225 Optimax was going to run about $9700 but it was still under warranty. Got lucky there, it blew up in Feb. and the warranty expired in March.

Call boatmasters, I smoked mine a couple of years ago. I saved a bunch of cash. We used my lower unit and put another like motor they had in the shop.

Go with a newer powerhead to save on the gas. Carb motors have to much emmisions and burns twice the amount of fuel. You can install a used Optimax powerhead onto your midsection and lower unit--it must be a 2.5L. Then upgrade the look with an aftermarket race cowling from Bob's machine. Its about 10 lbs lighter and 50% more accessible. Total cost of the swap should be around $4K but you'll save on the gas.
