BRAND NEW Shimano Curado 201B Drag Problem

I have a brnad new Shimano Curado 201B I purchased several years ago that I decided to use. I put line it in and for some reason the drag is very weak. I turn the star drag as far as it will go but only gets about 1/2 pound drag. Does anyone know what the problem might be?

Are you using braided line on the reel?

Did you back the spool with mono or masking tape prior to spooling with braid? Braided line will slip on the spool creating a false no drag problem if it is not backed.
