American Bass held their opening event, the Winter Classic at Lake San Vicente sponsored by Kayak Fishing Supplies. Twenty-seven anglers signed up for the event, which featured a 3-fish limit. Fishing was great for a few and tough for the rest of the field. San Vicente lake is in San Diego; California is the largest reservoir owned by the City of San Diego. It is part of the regional water system that also connects to the Colorado River via the First San Diego Aqueduct. This lake has specific hours and days of operation, and swimming or wading is not allowed. The bass fishing is normally excellent, but the colder water temperature made fishing challenging.
Both Cabrales and LemMon sat on points, fishing uphill to catch their fish, while Graunke fished in 25-foot of water to land her catches. With the daily limit of three fish, most anglers were happy to compete; however, due to the tough conditions, it was difficult to catch their limit.
Brandon Cabrales won with a total of 50.00”. He caught most of his fish early in the morning, capturing his limit within the first hour of the day. He used a drop shot fishing in 30 to 40 feet of water while positioning his boat in 10 feet of water and slowly dragging his bait uphill.
“My first spot, I was able to catch a limit of fish by 8:30 AM fishing a drop shot uphill with a real slow retrieve.” stated Cabrales, “I was drop shotting a Robo worm in the Margarita color.”
“It slowed down around 10 AM so I moved to another area but never upgraded my limit.” exclaimed Cabrales, “My last spot I was able to upgrade 1 inch to reach the 50” mark.”
“It was a grind all day long, with only seven keepers total.” remarked Cabrales, “I tried several different lures, but the drop shot caught all my fish.”
Cabrales thanked his family and friends for all their support, ABA for hosting this event, and Kayak Fishing Supplies.
Jeannette Graunke finished second with a total of 47.50” for her three-fish limit. Graunke used the Neko rig to catch her fish with the 25-foot range being the key to getting bites. Her Neko rig was a slim Senko, worked slowly.
“My first stop, I was able to catch a few nice fish on the Neko Rig.” mentioned Graunke, “I move to my second area and caught a few more fish but soon left and went to my main location.”
“My third spot produced some quality fish with a few missed fish that may have helped my limit.” declared Graunke, “This area is one of my main locations that I like to fish while at San Vicente.”
Graunke thanked Last Chance, Matt Magnone, Cali Bass Baits, Jeff Fogel, Bioenno Power and Jackson Kayaks.
Shane LemMon came in third place with a total of 47.25”. He caught his fish on a drop-shot Robo Worm Morning Dawn by fishing his rig uphill. He would spot lock on points and cast out to deep water slowly moving his drop shot.
“My first spot I caught a nice fish fairly quick, and then my second fish about an hour later.” declared LemMon, “Since it was a three fish limit and I had caught two keepers already, I decided to camp on that point the rest of the day.”
“I spot locked near the shore and casted out off the point in about 30 to 40 feet of water, dragging uphill.” pronounced LemMon, “I did not have any electronics on my kayak and fished old school by fishing the moment.”
“It felt good to fish my instincts and not rely on my electronics.” said LemMon.
LemMon thanked Bonified Kayaks, GSN Outdoors, Robo Worms, Yamamoto Baits, Phenix Rods, Amped Outdoors Lithium, Kayak Fishing Supplies, Sniper Marine, YakAttach, Rough Fishing, One Objective and Lowrance.
