What do you guys know about California Custom Worms? Please feel free to post or pm or email me. Do any of you guys use these worms and what colors and sizes do you like? What do you like or dislike about these baits?

Back in the day, California Custom Worms was the best. George Pultz was the original owner and everyone loved his worms. They got even more popular once Aaron Martens started kicking all of oue asses with them. Any of you who have been at this for as long as I have will remember 101-D, Oxblood, Summer Moss, Cin. Blue. Although the consistency was always suspect, they were the best around period. I remember buying 100 count bags with only maybe 60 or so worms being fishable because they were so badly under poured.
Wayne Dubois bought the company from George back in the nineties and things changed. The original Cal. Custom Worms featured thick molds and a lot of the guys like myself used to pick through the worm bins at Angler's Marine to get the fattest pours available. However, when the company was sold to Wayne, the molds were changed and so where the colors. Wayne's consistency was definitely better, but the worms weren't the same. Enter Roboworm. Once Robo hit the scene, they completely dominated the scene and I would imagine took a lot of business away from the small handpoured companies like Cal. Worms. Wayne did introduce a few innovative products like the Eagle, monster lizard, and some variations of zipper imitation baits. Wayne then sold the company to Tim Sharpe.
Tim is the most recent owner of the company and I would imagine that a big part of the current business is the Eagle/Baby E. Unfortunately, you don't see or hear about the baits anymore. I think Tim is shopping the business.
Califonia Custom Worms was once THE bait to have. Just like today's Huddlestons are the rage and nearly impossible to get, the original Cal. Worms were also. George Pultz was fortunate to have been involved with a few key players such as Aaron Martens and Dick Trask when he started. In addition, finesse fishing with hand poured baits exploded onto the scene in the late eighties and early nineties when Cal. Worms was at its prime.
Hopefully that synopsis of my history with California Custom Worms helps.

Hey Brian,
How's everything in O.C.?
Well let's see if i can get this straight here for everyone.Yes i own Ca. Custom & The Eagle Swimbait Co.
The swimbait line has grown so much and is pretty close to being a Year round bait that i just can't keep up with it all.......
That's the reason for selling the worm part of the company.Would like to find someone who would like to carry on with it and take it farther than it is.
There is still to this day alot of people, store's who buy and carry the product.I have gone as far as to get it in the midwest and east coast so the potential is there and can grow depeding on the NEW owner!
So in a nutshell there you go!!
Wait till the new swimbait is out! Hold on for this one!

Be good out there!

...here is the link to the Huddleston Deluxe website:

http://www.huddlestondeluxe.com

Most life-like swimbait ever made, bar none. And yes, Anglers Marine has them in stock (as of last week, that is). If you want one, you better hurry. (You can order them over the phone with a credit card @ 714-666-BOAT).

Thanks a lot for posting that link. Wow, those lures look so real. Do blue gill lures exist in the huddlestons?

What's up Tim and Brian and the gang....

Cal. Custom Worms best worm currently is the Mongrel, it's great at Clear Lake, the Delta, at night at Casitas. I bet it would work great at other lakes and times too...

Tim's got 100's of molds for different types of plastics in his shop. However, its his secret sauce that makes the worms work! No matter how much I beg, he won't tell me what it is. However, it sure smells familiar for some reason, I just can't put my finger on what the smell reminds me of.

2005 post, I believe Eagle Swimbait is long gone. I have a few of the original line through from that era.
Worms you pr best bet is Uptom's Customs or Iovino Products depending on what style of 6" hand pour you are looking for.
