Carpeting

Post by Smile_n_Jax »

Need to recarpet my Stratos 269V. Any recomendations for carpet and adhesive? I can do it myself. Just don't want to put down something that will start to pull up in about a year.

There was a site I heard about on this forum awhile ago - www.bassboatcarpets.com . Try checking that out. I can't tell you anything about them or their products however!

Just did my carpet myself. You must get marine grade carpet(rubber backing). You can find it at West Marine, Overtons or BPS. It is not a stock item and must be ordered. You also need marine adhesive. I used 3m spray adhesive on all the deck lids. It was not very difficult, the removal and clean up took most of the time. Pay attention to the grain of the carpet, it is directional and must be laid in the same direction. Good luck.

My local Lowes and home depot have the marine backed carpet and the right glue for the job.
I now know why it is called fishing and not catching!

Lowes or Home Depot sound like they might just be the ticket. Thanx guys.

Having done more than a few boat carpet jobs I will tell you that Bassboatcarpet.com is the place to buy your carpet. Get nothing less than the 20oz. It makes the lids a bit harder to open and close but its worth it in the end.
DO NOT buy the carpet from Home Depot otr Lowes unless you want to replace it in a year. Its cheap thin backed carpet. With the amount of labor involved get the good stuff the first time.
Good Luck on your carpet replacement. If I can help let me know.

I agree with GW. Buy the 20 oz carpet from Bassboatcarpet.com unless you want to do it over again in a year or two.

actually just had my boat recarpeted by Gary Watts, Citrus Heights. Beautiful job. I got the carpet from bassboatcarpets in Florida, shipped the same day, 20oz. is what you want. It cost like $300.00, and looks and feels like a new boat. If you want to have it installed ( I just did'nt have the time) Gary is the man. He's a perfectionist, and it shows.

the $300 was just the carpet, labor was additional, and well spent.

I agree with GW also I have carpeted quite a few boats over the years (well my wife and I ) You can buy enough carpet from Bassboatcarpets.com to do a 21 ft boat for $125.00 it's the 20 oz. marine. Also you can hit Doms Surplus in Livermore off main street, its the same 20 oz marine carpet and its instock all the time with alot of colors to choose from.

Next is the glue for 25.00 bucks you can buy DAP contact cement it comes in a red can can be bought by the gallon or the pint it is the best stuff on the market. it is totally water proof once dry.

Next your carpet job is only going to be as good as the prep job so do it right the first time. when you pull up the old carpet alot of times the rubber backing will be hard and stuck to the floor the carpet will rip up but leave this nasty stuff behind.

Get some "OOPS" can also be bought in the gallon this stuff works better then anything else out there! just pour it on let it sit for a min. then use a scraper(plastic perferably) and it will come of like butter. Keep it moist and do small areas at a time. Once stripped wipe the floor down with a towel and water and let it dry completely.

I remove all the doors first and do them you will need a few wood clamps to roll and tuck the corners of each door sucks holding them waiting for the glue to get tacky enough to hold.

Its alot of work so be ready depending on what year your boat is
and how big most boats can be done in a week end if you hussle.

If you have trim remove it drill all the rivets out and replace it with stainless steel screws once the new carpet is in. Stainless steel rivits are hard to work with the screws look nice and makes the re-install of the trim much easier just get the screws the size of the rivet holes. And last dont use the boat or let any water contact it for aleast 48 hours till the glue is totally dry and cured.

I have learned all these tips from trial and error hands on and all the products I mentioned can not be subsitutted if you want a clean looking job and to make it easy. The biggest being the OOPS this stuff beats out any acetone out there it eats that old glue and backing right up.

One more tip, I learned this the hard way the first boat I ever did was a cajun bass boat anyway the carpet was so rotted it would rip in pieces so I had to use craft paper to make my pattern for the main floor all went well till I cut the carpet I layed the pattern over my carpet which was reversed and cut it out when I went to install it it was 180 degrees backwards!!!! yea a wasted alot of carpet and a exspensive leasson learned. make sure your carpet is facing the right direction when you cut the pattern if you need to cut one!

Hope this helps

Wow, you guys are great! Lots of good advice and tips. Also got a pm with complete instructions from someone who I guess wants to remain anonymous. Got some things to look at as far as materials go. Think I'll take my time and do it one section at a time. No sense in trying to bite off more than I can chew. :D

What price would guys pay to have your boat re-carpeted? There seems to be a good demand for it. Maybe I'll start up a side job. Anyone have a shop do theirs?

I don't think you can get the 20 oz. from bassboatcarpet.com for $125 that will cover a 21 ft. bassboat. It's actually closer to $300.00 with shipping, but I did get alittle extra. Gary Watts does excellent work and recommends you purchase your carpet directly that way there's no mark up.

Bassboatcarpet.com sells a 25' roll of 6' wide for $185 plus $25 shipping to CA. That will cover my 16 footer. Didn't notice how much longer pieces were.
