The California Kayak Bass Nation (CAKBN) held their season opener on February 5th. and 6th., 2022 on Lake Shasta. 69 anglers made the trek to Northern California to see who would take the 2022 season opener title.

The fishing was reported to be tougher than expected with only 28 anglers catching a limit on day 1 and 25 anglers catching a limit on day 2 at a Spotted Bass factory that is well-known for numbers. Most anglers reported catching fish on slow moving, bottom bouncing baits in the 50’ range.

Day 1 had Chase Murdock of San Francisco, CA with an impressive 80.75-inch limit for five fish that secured him a 3.50-inch lead over 2nd, 3rd. and 4th. places all tied at 77.25 inches. On Day 2, John Myers of Atwater, CA (sitting in 5th. after day 1) was able to overcome a 4.50-inch deficit and tied it up with an 80.50-inch limit bringing the 2-day total for both anglers to 156.50 inches for ten fish.

Ultimately, it was Chase Murdock who secured the win due to the tie breaker rule where the largest first day limit breaks the tie. Chase reportedly caught both of his limits on a Zoom Trick Worm on the shaky head.
