Clear Lake Rocks!!!

Post by David Rogers »

I know what your thinking, does he mean Clear Lake Rocks like its awesome or Clear Lake Rocks like the ones that broke off my scag on my 175 Merc on 10/9 or the Rocks that bent my Turbo prop on 10/10!!!

Watch out, between Rattle snake Island and the Indian reservation there are rocks about 30 yards from shore about 2 feet deep right now and on the right side of the light pole coming out of the keys at Clear Lake oaks about 100 yards off shore there are rocks about 2 feet deep. I have been boating for 25 years and these are my first 2 prop/scag accidents on back to back days!!

Again I am talking 30 yards off shore and 100 yards off shore!!

I just had my prop done by Phils last year to  Got a guy in Lower lake that's going to weld a new scag on and he said he maybe able to fix my prop, it only has one bent blade. Bob over at Limit out recomended him.

Do not run fast around Rattlesnake Island if you don't know every inch of the area. There are inmoveable rocks just under the surface now - all around the island. Be careful!!! I, too, have damaged a prop years ago - just wasn't paying attention!

You should mark those rocks on your gps for use when the water moves back up. They definitely will hold fish! Sorry to hear about your prop and skeg. I did the same two weeks ago in the delta. Sucks! skeg should be cheap and easy to get fixed. Prop is another story. Good luck and try and not launch from rattlesnake arm. Go up to Lucerne and launch there.

Seems I remember back in the 80's or early 90's rocks between Rattlesnake and the sulpher banks, rocks just west of Rattlesnake and south side of Rattlesnake. lots of dangerous rocks and lots of bass.

With the lake so low, can you still get into Cache Creek outlet.

Do you mean 30 yards offshore from the small opening/gap between Rattlesnake Island and the east shoreline(Sulphur Bank), or between Rattlesnake Island and the west shoreline(the one that leads into the keys)????

Hey Alex,

Its the small opening on the south side of the island that takes you towards the Keys opening and as you are headed toward the keys stay to the left of the light pole, if you go between the light pole and the right side of the bank headed in you will knock off your prop and or scag even if you are 100 yards from the bank. The north side of the island that is between 20 and the island is OK.

One more point, there is a light pole as you are coming in from the narrows towards Rattlesnake Island that is marking rocks, 30 yards past it toward the island there is another rock pile 1 foot above water that is not marked, this one will kill you if you are not careful also, I saw this one while I was fishing around that light pole, I almost ran up on it with my trolling motor.

What would it cost the county to put in a few markers? Not much, how much has it cost the public that drives from all over the US in broke scags and props or even worse, I would hate to guess

Hopefully you guys have decent insurance with a low deductible. For those of you who have a high deductible you might want to switch. The premium is not that much higher if you choose a lower deductible. It's always a good idea to have a spare prop on hand as well, so you don't have to wait around for your prop to get repaired. Don't think the State cares too much about marking rocks when the water is down. The State is top heavy; middle class will still continue to take it in the bASS  :!:

I have a few more points of interest on my gps as well. I was lucky as well as I was on the trolling motor.

I was at the entrance to the Keyes Saturday afternoon. A small runabout with a dad and a couple of little guys made friends with the bottom about 100 yds off shore.

Careful out there.
I had to come back...I know...

Clear Lake is 1.13' above Zero Rumsey, so you're looking at 6.5' drop in level from a full lake (7.56').

Fish-n-Map Co. is one of the best maps with depth contours for the lake well illustrated. Good source to have on board when navigating unknown territory. :)

You can navigate Cache Creek from the inlet near Indian Island up to the Grigsby Riffle, roughly three miles upstream from the Cache Creek Dam.

The rock sill has gravel above water at that point, except for the sides near the bank.

Kayaks, canoes, and small row boats can venture pass that point, but larger vessels can go no further.

Can someone post a map of these hazards or GPS coordinates?

Satellite image shows that area to be very shallow coming out of the Keys. I don't think anyone should be driving fast in this area. I once found myself in a foot of water when I came off plane. Use common sense and you should be ok. Little Franks in the Delta is the same way. All the cuts coming from the Piper Sl are full of rocks. If you are gotz the balls and need access to your spot navigate with the trolling motor. Once you found a safe path save the trail and mark the hazards you find.

Be careful going into Cache Creek. It is very shallow at the mouth, and when I was there about 5 weeks ago, I was wrapping a lot of weeds around the prop. Go slow and use your trolling motor past the bouys
