Central Valley Kayak Fishing (CVKF) held their 2019 season finale at Eastman Lake located in Madera County in the foothills east of Chowchilla. 23 anglers came out for the final event. They were met with cold temperatures (high 30s to low 40s in the AM) and strong winds. By 9AM, the wind was calm and the sun was out (warmed up to 70 degrees). Water temperature ranged from 57 to 61 degrees and clarity was stained with green algae noted. With recent reports of a tough bite and big fish hard to come by, it was anyone’s game. Predictions were if you could find a limit you would be in the running. Most anglers reported catching fish on the dropshot in 30 to 40 feet on rock piles and ledges.
By day’s end, it was Damian Thao of Fresno, CA. who once again dominated the field. Thao is known as a local stick on Eastman and he lived up to his reputation. Despite the tough conditions, he was able to capture Big Fish, First Place, and the Pro Pot (5 fish option). Damian reported that he was throwing a swimbait early but didn’t have any takers. He then switched up to a jig and dropshot 1-2 punch. He located fish offshore in 35 feet on rock piles and ledges. He would rotate his 2 baits back and forth to coax the fish into biting. He reported that his worm color of choice was “peanut butter and jelly”.
Top 3 (4 fish limit):
1. Damian Thao – 64.75 inches
2. John Myers – 55.75 inches
3. Wa Meng Vue – 55.25 inches
1. Damian Thao – 17.25 inches
Pro Pot (5 fish limit):

The 2020 CVKF season kicks off on March 1st. on Kaweah Lake with a team event.
