Darker colored Bassboats in the summer?...How much...

Post by Shad*Wizard »

hotter does a darker colored boat get while you are fishing in it during the hot summer months?...The carpet might be a lighter shade but does the dark colored fiberglass cap make a great difference where it really affects you?...Chime in please...

I went from a plain aluminum boat with tan carpet to a red aluminum boat with charcoal carpet and just fishing in it it seems hotter, at least on hot days. the metal doesnt get warmer to the touch because it conducts into the water at some point, but the black plastic motor housing will get hot because it can't conduct the heat as well.

It's the carpet

Post by Terry »

If you fish the Colorado River lakes, etc., carpet color DOES make a big difference. I fished the River in a Champion with charcoal carpets on Memorial Day, ripped up a pair of well-worn flip-flops, ended up barefoot and burning big blisters on the balls of my feet. You can feel the heat off the carpet.

The cap color doesn't make much difference as far as I can tell, though.

I would like to think that most of us guys have enough glitter on the boat to reflect most of the suns rays :P

I have a dark red almost maroon Sketter with matching carpet. I also fish with my Delta partner who has a mostly white BassCat with grey carpet and to be honest I hardly notice the difference when fishing out of either boat.

When it is hot outside, like the boiler we had yesterday, I dont think it makes one bit of differance.

I have a rootbeer colored z20 and it COOKS in the hot months. Sometimes I burn my chest leaning over it. My next boat WILL be a light color.

For those who say it doesn't matter... not sure where you're fishing or what you consider hot, but YES, it does make a difference if you touch the surface.

Also, as mentioned, yes the darker carpet colors make a huge difference, even more than the gel coat color.

I proved both of these precepts yesterday, once again, here on the Delta - OUCH!

I have a Black and Blue boat with dark grey carpet and my next one will have a lighter color topcap. My boat is smoking hot in the summer time. I think it does make a difference.

I am in dry storage at Russos which is pretty dusty. So my charcoal grey 21 ft Champ stays cool in the summer mostly due to it's protective coating of dirt.
