Discontinued Shimano Reels ?

Post by Norcaldrifter »

What happens when Shimano discontinues a reel? I know parts are no longer made for that model once it is discontinued. So...my question is...let's assume there is a very popular baitcasting reel in the Shimano lineup that is discontinued when a new version comes out. How long will parts typically be available for that model...especially parts that commonly need to be replaced? Are there aftermarket parts available beyond that time frame? If I buy a reel today, and it is discontinued tomorrow, how long before that reel becomes obsolete because parts are not avail? Thanks in advance for info. NCD.

Typically we maintain parts for 5-7 years. This will vary depending on how many units were sold during the life span of the model as well. Parts can be around for almost 10 years, but that is up to Shimano Japan who is making the parts.

OK...welll now that the cat is out of the bag on the CHMG50/CHMG51, I'll ask directly...do you expect that parts will be available for this very popular reel for another 10 years? What happens if your reel goes down after that? Aftermarket parts, or new reel time? Thanks!

Well Shimano Japan dictates how long we will have parts. Like I said 5-7 years, but some reels have been going for almost 10 years. Once they are discontinued there is the option of our warranty centers that may have parts. I have not seen many aftermarket repair parts like what we see in the automotive world. Something tells me its not as lucrative of a business
