I've never used them, but I held one the other day at Valley rod and Gun and I'm saving a few pennies and stealing some others for one...

They are an awsome rod and make casting the swimbaits easy. How ever for my profile and height I found the rod handle to be to long for me as after the cast I would go to switch it over to the other side and it would bump up against my chest. So you might want to compare them both side by side to see which one fits you best. I hope this helps!

Hey Bro,
Which one in particular do you want to know about? I throw the whole line-up but I lean toward the 806H, 807mag, and 866H for most of my needs. I LOVE them!

Supermat,

What do you use the 866 for? Shore fishing?

My first experience with the Dobyns ML rods were during the 2007 trade shows. I too was a bit concerned with the longer handle until I actually tied a large swim bait on the end of an 806 and lobed it over a hundred feet. From that point on I understood why Mike Long was chosen to design them. The longer handle gave me the added leverage to throw heavy baits farther and with less effort than any other swim bait rod I’ve used. Casting with the long handle does not pose a problem for me, I am right handed and begin with my left foot forward, I start my cast with the rod handle on the outside of my left leg and finish with the handle tucked under my left arm, in perfect position for the retrieve.

I have tried quite a few different swimbait rods over the past 5 years. That 795ML is very sweet. It can handle small 6 inch baits all the way to ROF 16 Hudds. ANything bigger go up to the 6 power. The 806ML is a lob casting machine. LOL. I'm with Tobe I was also skeptical of the long handle on the 806ML. Once you take lob a Hudd into Orbit you will then know why Mike did that handle the way he did LOL. I use the 806ML for more open water presenations where long casting is needed. For more accuracy I'll use the 795ML. It is my understanding that the 806HSB is the same blank as the 806 but with a shorter handle and cork for the grip piece. So if you dislike the long handle size the 806HSB might be an option for you.

love mine...I'm 5'8" and the handle on the 806 is no biggie..unless you love donuts a wee bit too much

Thanks for the great info guys. I coouldn't find any good reviews on them. I'm leaning towards the 806ML, but also the 866H. Just don't know if I want the extra 6". I am a big guy, so I like the 18" handle idea. Thanks again guys.

I use the 866 for everything that has treble hooks. Everyone thinks its some giant stick that is only made for HUGE baits but that's just not true. Does it throw the giant baits? ABSOLUTELY! However, its got enough tip flex to keep treble hooks planted firmly without pulling out.
I throw all my ROF 5 hudds, triple trout, wakebaits, etc... on it.
