Dobyns rod for spinnerbaits and buzzbaits?
I want a Dobyns rod for fishing spinnerbaits and buzzbaits in open water as well as cover. I usually throw 3/8-1/2 oz lures on 15-17lb line. I used a G Loomis MBR783C in the past with success so maybe one of the 3 powered rods will suit me. I'm interested in the 703C and 733C. If I'm comfortable with 7' rods would stepping up to the 733C feel awkward, especially for casting in tight quarters?
On a side note, I'd consider the 704C or 734C, if they have a soft enough tip to cast lures from 1/4-1/2 oz. I have a G Loomis MBR844C, which I feel is to stiff for casting spinnerbaits and buzzbaits. If the 704C or 734C has a softer tip than the 844C and a comparable backbone it might work. I primarily use an underhand roll cast so I don't want to be fighting the rod all day.

I am by no means an expert but here is my 2 cents worth. I have made and sold spinnerbaits for almost 20 years now; and by far the 734C Dobyns rod is tops in it's field. I can throw a 1/4 oz to a 1 oz spinnerbait with my Diawa procaster all day; feel the blade vibration, every twig, bump, rock, etc: (Even in the wind, with some effort !!)
Go with it............You'll love it !!

just a few thoughts.... I don't own any Dobyns rods but I just happened to be at Fishermans Sac last night looking at the same four you mentioned.......personally I go with either power four rod... may depend on storage since they're one piece
I do own 3 Loomis 783's and a 784..... the 784 was my standard 1/2 roll cast blade rod for years...... for me the 783 is better suited for 1/4-3/8 blades (but excellent for a lot of treble hook baits up to 1/2) ... just a personal preference
These day's I'm going with longer (telescopic) rods, up to 8' for everything. For open water fishing the longer rod will give you more distance. In tight quarters you'll sacrafice accuracy roll casting with a long rod. What I've found is I can pitch a blade or buzzer with an 8' rod in tight quarters and get the same or better accuracy and distance I used to get with my 784..... plus all the benefits of the longer rod. It's definately an adjustment..... but IMO a good one.

Big Daddy. By Telescopic rod, do you mean the new telescopic(folding type) or two piece. Dump question I know, but just curious. Bill K

For the application regarding spinner baits I would recommend Garys' 703C or the DX703C.
703C Split 7', 1pc, 10-17lb, 1/4-3/4oz, Med/Hvy Ex Fast Action Senkos, Jigs, Flukes, Texas Rigs, Spinnerbaits Casting Rod
DX 703C Split 7', 1pc, 10-17lb, 1/4-3/4oz, Med/Hvy Ex Fast Action Senkos, Jigs, Flukes, Texas Rigs, Spinnerbaits Casting Rod
As for buzzbaits I would recommend Garys' 734C or DX734C.
734C Full 7'3", 1pc, 10-20lb, 1/4-1oz, Hvy Fast Action Spinnerbaits, Buzzbaits, Senkos, Horny Toad Casting Rod
DX 734C Full 7'3", 1pc, 10-20lb, 1/4-1oz, Hvy Fast Action Spinnerbaits, Buzzbaits, Senkos, Horny Toad Casting Rod
The difference between the champion and the champion extreme is higher modulus in the extreme equalling more sensitivity.
These rods are top of the line, designed by a bass fisherman with an extreme passion for only the best product he can produce. I personally gaurantee you will enjoy many years of quality bass fishing with this product.

I throw blades on a Dobyns Champion 703c and I LOVE this rod for blades. The tip loads of perfect to launch a blade out there with great accuracy and it has plenty of backbone.I would imagine that the 733 would be killer for blades as well.
I don't think you can go wrong with the 703C,it's a sweet rod for blades,I throw mainly 1/2 Revenge and War Eagle blades and have it paired with a Daiwa Zillion HLC and Sunline Defier 17lb.

I use the 734C. The rod is plenty long and has the balls to rip the fish out of the harriest cover.

flipping stiks (Lami 806's & 797's plus Loomis 904X's & 864's) where the blank slides into the handle for storage.... I only have a 19' boat and I don't like having too much bend placed on the rod in the locker. If I could get a way with all one piece 8 footers I would.Bill K wrote:Big Daddy. Where would the tip action of the 704C and 734C lie? Similar to the MBR843C? Maybe in between the 843C and 844C? Also does the 734C have a softer tip than the 704C?

Re: Dobyns rod for spinnerbaits and buzzbaits?
I would suggest the 734C for you spinnerbait needs. Moving to a 7'3" from a 7' rod will not be awkward for you at all, especially with the balance of the Dobyn's Rods. It will most likely feel better than the 7' rods you have used in the past.
The 734 has a soft enough tip for me to roll cast yet the rod has the backbone/power to handle heavy fish and heavy cover.

Got you Big Daddy. The handle section only;, understand now. Heck I even have one of those, but just never thought of it as the telescopic type, but I guess it is the same principal with just one section. I said dumb question. Bill K
