This is the section that covers part of your question from the CDFG hand book.

But you need to check the regulations on the exact area you are at. There are certain waterways that are closed, ie. someplace around Franks Track, Oroville Lake and many many others.

§251. Prohibition on Pursuing or Shooting Birds and Mammals from Motor-Driven Air or Land Vehicles, Motorboats, Airboats, Sailboats or Snowmobiles.

(a) General Prohibition: No person shall pursue, drive, herd, or take any bird or mammal from any type of motor-driven air or land vehicles, motorboat, airboat, sailboat, or snowmobile. Additionally, no person shall use any motorized, hot-air, or unpowered aircraft or other device capable of flight or any earth orbiting imaging device to locate or assist in locating big game mammals beginning 48 hours before and continuing until 48 hours after any big game hunting season in the same area. No person shall use at any time or place, without Department approval, any computer, telemetry device or other equipment to locate a big game mammal to which a tracking device is attached. For purposes of this subsection "use" includes but is not limited to personal use or intent by another to obtain information from such personal use. Evidence of an act constituting a violation of this section includes but is not limited to flying slowly at low altitudes, hovering, circling or repeatedly flying over any area where big game may be found. Exceptions to this subsection are:

(1) When the motor of such motorboat, airboat, or sailboat has been shut off and/or the sails furled and its progress therefrom has ceased, and it is drifting, beached, moored, resting at anchor, or is being propelled by paddle, oar or pole.

(2) When used by the landowner or tenant of private property to drive or herd game mammals for the purpose of preventing damage to private property.

(3) Pursuant to a license from the department issued under such regulations as the commission may prescribe (see subsection 251(b) below).

i read that same passage from the dfg--i am still abit confused--i will be hunting the cal delta--since you cannot pursue upland game under movement,i am assuming the pursute stops when you do or are tied up or are anchored--so i guess its legal to be tied up, ill call the dfg for clarification monday--i heard upland and waterfowl tend to have differant reg's on this--thx xman

Try this one on for size! no where in the rules does it say you cant hunt while fishing a tourney! lol. I duck hunt on the delta all the time during season on the front deck of my tirton! white and blue boat is better camo than eucalyptus on the duck blind! As long as you are stationary and not under power of any sort and this is the biggie! more thatn 200 yards from any city limits, marinas, or residences and there is not a specific closure in that area its fair game! Been wondering when someone would figure out the awesome dove hunting on the river!!!! guess im not alone any more!!! good luck.

ya right, even if you could drop u'm from the boat , could you ever find it in the thick stuff? Dogs don't like to pick up doves, the feathers stick to the mouth, a duck dropped in the tules is hard to find, let alone a bird as small as a dove(Very Tastey) Find the routes of the birds get permission and hunt from land if you are for real
Has anyone ever shot a green head, bull sprig or a honker, during a tournament , cashed a check. and had the bird for dinner, sounds good to me, a cut above a turkey shoot Ya Think ? Clay Pigeons are fun to shoot but don't cook up too good.
the best way to catch a big one is don't lose um sharp hooks set drag retie!

oh yeah I almost forgot I have a black lab who retrieves doves!!! great dog to usaully try to drop em in the open water but have had my lab get em outta the thick stuff to. Best bird dog ive ever owned. The tourney statement was just that I wondered about it so I asked a t.d. once and he said there as no clear rule against it!!! Guess I mis worded that sequence I usually shoot a duck or two while out fun fishing never tried it in a tourney altho there have been times where i would have resorted to duck huntung cuz the bite was tough!
