drop shot line
drop shot line
I recently purchased a spinning set up for dropshotting. Prior to that I used baitcasting gear. What line does everyone use on their spinning dropshot set ups? I use mostly fluoro on everything else but I am considering going to braid with a fluoro leader for the spinning set up. Any of you out there use this combo?

Re: drop shot line
Yep... Luke Clausen spoke about this at last year's Bass A Thon, so I tried it afterward and haven't gone back. It aleviates the symptoms of line twist (braid still twists, just doesn't act up like mono or flourocarbon) and works great! Also let's you change line diameters on the fly - just tie on a different leader and your set.
I use 10# PowerPro, and usually tie on 6# flourocarbon using a uni-to-uni knot with 4 twists on each side... hasn't failed me yet.

Re: drop shot line
You can feel just about anything with the braided line. It would probably be the better choice if your fishing really deep (50ft+)
You can also use a low memory copolymer, like P-line CX if your not a big braid fan (I pretty much shy away from braid with the exception of a frog rod and a swimbait rod.)
Agreed, uni-knot join is about as good as it gets.
6 lb fluorocarbon is about standard, you could bump up to 8 if you need a little more insurance.

According to this article, I have been spooling my reels a$$-backwards for the last 20 yrs! Is this correct????
I believe it should come off the spool just like toilet paper, off the top!
[/quote]The correct way to spool line onto most any modern day spinning reel (and all baitcasters) is shown below. The line should come off the bottom of the spool whether spooling monofilament, fluorocarbon or braided line.

Re: drop shot line
Yeah, including all the tackle stores I've seen winding line... I'm not sure who wrote that article, I'm not sure they're the best authority?
It goes against physics... - the line has a natural coil to it, and by following their instructions you are winding it against the coilset and the line won't sit properly against the spool.
Over the top has worked well for me for over 20 years, so I think I'll keep doing it 'wrong' then...

Re: drop shot line
Grant,
When I use braid for drop or split shotting I usually need use more more weight compared to using mono or florocarbon. It seems that if I use 1/8 ounce with mono or florocarbon I need 1/4 or greater when I use braid. Also with braid I get a lot of loops coming off the spool then I need to strip the line down to where the loop is and then rewind it. Otherwise the loop causes problems with casting and occasionally will pull off a big glob of line and create a big mess. Does anyone else need to use more weight or have a similar line problem? If so, what increase in weight have you needed or what have you done to eliminate the looping problem?
See you at the club meeting tomorrow???

Re: drop shot line
Grant, I suppose you are referring to the Delta. Use about fifteen flourocarbon. 100%.
basssin is the way I want to go.

shimano crucial CRSX72M 7'2''Medium/Extra Fast spinning rod, shimano symetre 2500 w/17lb backing, 20lb PP braid, spro swivel, 4-5' of 10 or 12# seaguar invix flouro, owner downshot hook. I prob run more weight on the bottom of the line than most to try to punch thru cover

Re: drop shot line
You might wanna give either Berkely's new Trilene Professional Grade(Green tint) or the new Stren 100% Fluoro(blue tint) a fair try. Both are excellent 100% Fluorocarbon resin lines, made right here in the good ole USA! I've been using both now for about three months on a variety of rods and applications here on the Delta and ClearLake.
Pure Fishing has finally delivered an outstanding Fluoro that rates with the best of em! I'm still a Sugoi purest, but it's nice to build confidence in other products and have options not only for myself, but clients and friends as well.

Re: drop shot line
No, this combo is for lakes. Probably 2/10 braid with an 8 lb fluoro leader.
Re: drop shot line
if it was me at lakes, fwiw, I'd lighten up even further but still use a mono backing off the spool, and a matched braid and flouro line size combo setup - that's line *size* and not line *weight*Grant wrote:No, this combo is for lakes. Probably 2/10 braid with an 8 lb fluoro leader.
but I'd shoot for a 4-6lb leader when all is said and done.
eg: 10lb trilene mono backing to build the spool height up, 15lb powerpro (.007 line size) matched to a leader of 4lb (.007) or 6lb (.008) seaguar invisix flouro, and a uni knot to connect the braid and flouro vs swivel. the braid won't wind up on the spool like flouro will so you can prob get away with not using a swivel.
run it on a powell 701cef spinning rod and you'll be able to feel the fish fart nearby.

Re: drop shot line
I have used braid with flouro leaders on my drop-shot rod. It worked OK but i much prefer strait 6# flouro to braid. but if you get the braid put a small swivel and tie a bunch of premade flouro leaders so when they break off it is faster to put on another one.
