Engine swap
Engine swap
So I found an engine to put on my boat but now I'm stuck with trying to find the best way to physically swap them out. I talked to a marine repair place and he'd want $500-$600 to do the job. I'm fairly mechanically inclined so I cant see dropping that kind of cash for something I should be able to do myself.
Now the question is whats the best way to hoist the engines up and move them around. Will an engine cherry picker work fine and lift high enough or will i need to figure out something that can lift higher?
Anyone ever done this or have the equipment to help me out? I'd be willing to pay someone for their time and expertice, within reason. Thanks!

Re: Engine swap
a cherry picker will work real well. I would suggest you talk to a mechanic as I believe that there is some silicone you have to put in a bunch of places. Call Mike at C&C Citrus Heights and he will give you information for free as he is a stand up guy.

I know that to pull the engine, the right way, you need a part that ataches to the flywheel. At least that is what i was told. It makes sense though... where are you going to hook the picker up to? I would follow RipnRogs advice and call a mechanic to figure out all the details.

Re: Engine swap
There is a picking Eye that screws into the center of the fly wheel. You can use a cherry picker and hoist from there. It will be plenty tall enough to do it. Make sure you marine silicone the bolt holes and bolts real good. It is not that hard.
Re: Engine swap
Scotty, if the engine is a Mercury, you need to get a "Lifting Ring" that is made to specifically thread into the top of the flywheel/crankshaft. You can find these on E-Bay for $20-30, or go to Mercury Parts Express wabsite and put in the serial number for your outboard and it will give you the proper part number. I believe all motors above 75HP use the same lifting ring. BE SURE TO USE NEW STAINLESS BOLTS AND BRASS NYLOKS when installing the new motor. I installed the jackplate on my Ranger in about 30mins using a cherry picker and lifting ring. Be sure that all the cables/controls and steering match up before you swap everything out. Good Luck...

Re: Engine swap
I have a lifting eye for merc,s and a small forklift at my yard in stockton. If thats close enough for you , you can use it. I've done 10 or so. takes about 1hr to do the motor swap then you can take it home to do anything else you have to do. also if you're going to swap the motor might as well add a jack plate, most of the time it inproves performance and make it easier to do motor swaps or trim work later.
Re: Engine swap
The old motor is a 200 hp Merc and the new motor is a 200 hp Yamaha Vmax. Anyone know if the lifting eyes are standard for both? Thanks for the replies its definitely giving me some good info.

Does the old saying "if you have to ask" possibly apply? Especially changing brands, I would pay. My life is worth more than 600 bucks. Not a personal attack so please dont bring it back. Just one mans opinion.

Re: Engine swap
Yamaha comes with lifting rings on their blocks. The big concern is going to be that you have to switch out all of the controls. This would include the wiring harness, shift/throtle system, and maybe even the tach and trim guage.
make sure you get the wiring harness with the new motor.

Yea I got all the wiring harness, throttle control, throttle cables, tach...etc
The only thing I dont have is the trim/tilt motor. I'm gonna have to see if the one I already have will work on it. Besides that everything else is there and all I have to do is take off the old and put on the new. Hopefully it will be that simple.
Any other things to look out for besides lubricating the mounting bolts?
