Etiquite on guide tipping?

Post by msilva21 »

Hey all. Now that I will be boatless in the near future, I'll be hoping to spend some more time out with professional guides on the delta.
My question.. What is the normal tipping rate for a guided trip?

Thanks!

Do what you feel.
In most cases 15% (like you would tip a waitress), can be high. Dinner usually is under $100.00, so 15% looks like chump change. Most guides, on the other hand, will run 3-5 hundred. 15% usually can be hefty. If you book a guide with a buddy, definately stick with the 15% rule - maybe even 20%. By yourself however, 5-10% is fine. Most guides won't complain, it's more of a notion of a job well done, than it is about the money.

BTW:
Aside from my online shop, guiding is my only source of income, so tips are always graciously accepted.

Peace,
James

Aw, man Jigs...I already have been mentally preparing to be separated from my boat and now you have to make me think. :D
Man,,I have not filled up the gas tank since I drove it out of Pedro the day I bought it, and I've fished a tourney at Camanche and a 1/2 dozen other times at the Delta and local lakes. She is kind on fuel to say the least.
I'll probably only do guides 3x/year...Still cheaper than boat ownership at this point in my life. Plus, I know I'll catch fish, right?

Do you tip your plumber for fixing your toliet? Or your mechanic for fixing your car?

You tip your waitress @ a restaurant you food doesn't include a service charge.

The tip for a service individual is call them the next time you need that service.

"Tips" is an acronym for "To Insure Prompt Service" and was originally paid ahead of time for better service. It's the same as greasing someone's palm. Nowadays, tips are paid after the fact, as a reward or recognition for more than satisfactory service.

If he did a competent job, and you had a good day, 10%.

If he did a great job & you had a great day, 20%

If he did a crappy job, zip.

I went out salmon fishing on a party boat 7-8 years ago out of Half Moon Bay. It was slow, so only about 1/3 of the folks on board caught anything. That happens. What should not have happened was I started to get cold, went into the cabin for my jacket, and found a hung over deck hand asleep using it for a pillow. I didn't catch anything, either, and he got nada dot doo doo for a tip.

I have never been on a Bass Guide trip but for Trout you always tip. I don't usually pick a percentage I just give him an amount. But I can assure you it is never less than a hundred or 20%. He is creating memories and or knowledge that will last a lifetime and you can't put a price on that.

The comment on not tipping from above is crazy. There has been one time that I wanted to drown my guide on the green river(excellent browns in that river) but once we understood what our differences he worked really hard to put me on fish. Would I recommend him again, no, but I did tip him because he worked hard to get me on fish.
